Hydraulic presses are essential components of any manufacturing facility. Unfortunately, when they fail, production can suffer as a result.
To avoid productivity loss, manufacturers should be aware of the most common hydraulic press tooling issues and how to resolve them. Keep reading to find out more!
1. Insufficient Pressure
Hydraulic presses are used for a range of tasks, such as compressing materials, molding, cutting or punching metal. While they're powerful machines with numerous uses, hydraulic presses also pose serious safety hazards to operators and nearby workers.
One common hydraulic press tooling issue is insufficient pressure. This can be caused by several causes, such as overfilling an oil reservoir, contaminated check balls and damaged piston packing.
To avoid this issue, always fill an oil reservoir properly and clean or replace check balls periodically. Furthermore, replace piston packing before it begins to wear or become corroded.
2. Overheating
Hydraulic presses require regular maintenance and care to stay running optimally and avoid mechanical issues in the future. By taking these simple steps, you can extend their life expectancy and prevent common machine issues, saving you from having to replace them at higher costs in the future.
Overheating is another common issue for hydraulic presses that can lead to catastrophic failure and chemical hazards if left unchecked. Hydraulic fluid must stay below 180 degrees Fahrenheit; if the system exceeds this temperature, seal compounds will degrade, leading to leaks and decreased press performance.
Overheating can be caused by a variety of issues, such as equipment damage and loose fittings that let oil seep around the ram or hydraulic lines. To prevent this issue from arising, keep the oil clean and within its recommended temperature range.
3. Overloading
Hydraulic presses are powerful machines that can shape, cut, drill or destroy many materials. As essential tools for both specialized and general tasks alike, they require regular care and upkeep in order to stay operational and safe.
Overloading is a common hydraulic press tooling issue, as it can prevent the machine from functioning optimally and raise safety issues for those near it.
Operators must always keep the area surrounding a press clean to prevent overloading. Dirt, dust and debris can pose a serious safety hazard if they get into tooling or onto the machine itself.
4. Leaking Oil
Oil leaks from a hydraulic press can wreak havoc and even cause your equipment to malfunction. Furthermore, the highly pressurized oil could ignite in mere seconds due to its explosive potential.
Piston oil seal, pump plunger or release valve rod leaks can occur. Regular inspection and maintenance can prevent these failures from occurring in the first place.
If you spot an oil puddle or greasy substance near your hydraulic press, it is best to shut it off right away. Doing this can save both money and headaches in the long run.
5. Damaged or Worn Components
Hydraulic presses, like any tool, can become damaged or worn with use. If not repaired promptly, this could lead to serious harm to machines, equipment and workers alike.
Maintaining a hydraulic press requires operators to follow maintenance schedules and adhere to safety protocols. They should also be familiar with all components and how to utilize them correctly.
Common hydraulic press issues involve damaged or worn components. These could include the pump plunger, release valve rod and piston oil seal.
