Hydraulic Press Automation Systems

Hydraulic presses are common tools of the trade in many industries for assembly and maintenance tasks. They operate by applying pressure through a pump to push a steel cylinder at an established force.
When selecting hydraulic press automation systems, there are various options to choose from. It's essential that you select the one best suited for your application and process requirements.
Servo Drives
Servo drives employ a microprocessor to analyze incoming signals and adjust the mechanism according to changes in conditions. They're often the best solution for machines that must adjust quickly.
They are more energy efficient compared to VFDs, which require electricity only when the motor is running. This can save a considerable amount of money over time.
The two primary types of servo drives are digital and analog. Analog servos use pulse width modulation (PWM) to control their motor, providing higher resolution.
Digital servo drives feature a microprocessor that analyzes incoming signals and adjusts the mechanism according to changing conditions. This can be particularly helpful in cases where quick adjustments are required.
Servo drives are commonly employed for various applications such as conveyor belts, hydraulic pumps, air blowers and some electric vehicles. These systems offer precision that is lacking from servos but within the capabilities of VFDs - giving rise to a middle ground between VFDs and servos that provides loose precision without sacrificing too much performance.
PLC Controls
Programmable logic controller (PLC)s use a straightforward programming language to carry out switching and logic operations, making them much more user-friendly than computers that rely on general-purpose programming languages.
PLC programs differ from computer programs in that they use symbols instead of text to represent opening and closing relays, counters, timers, shift registers and mathematical operations. These symbols are organized into a program routine or "rungs" of logic.
Ladder logic is the most widely used PLC programming language, designed to look like electrical circuit schematics.
Other PLC programming languages provide more complex features. One such language is Function Block Diagram (FBD), which illustrates functions between input and output variables.
Motion Controls
Motion control is an integral component of hydraulic press automation. It enables systems to seamlessly transition from one mode of operation to another.
A motion controller is an electronic control device that takes command signals representing motor torque, position or velocity and converts them into electrical energy needed to drive the actuator. Common control systems employ servo drives and amplifiers which translate low-energy reference signals into high-energy inputs for motors.
Motion control devices come in a range of forms. These include programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and programmable automation controllers (PACs), PC-based systems, stand-alone units and microcontrollers.
Safety
Hydraulic presses are a versatile piece of machinery that can be employed for many tasks. However, they also pose potential hazards if not used properly.
Hydraulic press safety standards are essential for keeping people safe when operating this equipment. They should be built upon an expert understanding of hydraulics and their components, as well as a commitment to following proper procedures.
Furthermore, all workers who operate a hydraulic press machine should receive comprehensive training to become aware of potential hazards and precautions. Undertrained users are more vulnerable to injury than highly-trained professionals.
Some common issues that can occur on hydraulic presses include oil leaks, overheating and broken rams. With simple repair and maintenance, these problems won't escalate into serious injury or costly damage to the equipment.
