Common Hydraulic Press Problems

Hydraulic presses are powerful machines in any fabrication shop. Without regular inspection and upkeep, these machines may experience various malfunctions.
These failures can be costly and cause extensive downtime; however, they are preventable with proper attention.
Leaking Hydraulic Fluid
Hydraulic leaks are an all-too-common issue in hydraulic systems. Not only can they lead to decreased performance and unreliable outcomes, but they can also cause premature component wear as well as higher costs.
A leak is an opening or tear in a pipeline that allows hydraulic fluid to escape the system. It may occur either internally or externally.
Leaks can be caused by a number of things, such as contamination, improper fluid selection, high operating temperatures, alignment issues or seal failure - just to name a few.
The primary danger of an undetected hydraulic leak is that it could go undetected for some time, leading to costly damage to your equipment. That's why it's critical to detect and fix them as soon as possible.
Once leaks are identified, the sooner you can address them and minimize their effect on your business. Not only does this save time and money but also headaches; moreover, it helps prevent fluid from ending up in waterways or soil, potentially leading to significant environmental harm.
Overheating
Overheating can be a serious issue for hydraulic presses. It leads to system inefficiencies, deterioration and equipment breakdown.
Heat can degrade and alter fluid viscosity, decreasing lubricity and raising the likelihood of leaks. Furthermore, high temperatures cause hoses and seals to harden, increasing wear rates and shortening the lifespan of your hydraulic equipment.
A hot hydraulic system is a warning sign that something is wrong, so you need to act promptly. To prevent further damage and permanent equipment failure, identify and address the cause of the overheating and take necessary measures for correction.
Common causes of overheating include aeration, low reservoir fluid levels and damaged or blocked heat exchangers. To address the issue you can either reduce your heat load or boost your capacity to dissipate heat.
Cracked Frame
Hydraulic presses use hydraulic pressure to move a ram and shape the workpiece. They are particularly suitable for isothermal forging due to their slower speed and extended contact time with the workpiece compared to other forging presses.
However, even the best-made press can fail if it doesn't receive regular multi-point inspections and predictive maintenance. These assessments help detect issues before they become critical.
For instance, if the frame of a press breaks down, production can come to a screeching halt - especially if the machine is being used in high volume.
Cracks in press can be caused by many things, including accidents, rust or abuse from using it in extreme ways. Examples include towing too much weight, jumping the press or running it through an intense off-road situation.
Determining when it's time for a replacement press is essential in ensuring production runs smoothly.
Electrical Issues
When working with a hydraulic press, it's essential to watch out for signs of electrical problems. These can cause downtime and require costly repairs or replacements.
Hydraulic presses use a combination of fluid pressure and force to compress, hammer or straighten metal parts. They're widely used in industries like automotive manufacturing, microwave parts fabrication, refrigerator component fabrication and beverage can fabrication.
One of the primary causes of electrical issues in a hydraulic press is an inadequate or damaged electrical circuit. This could include an unresponsive power board, malfunctioning motor or other electronic component.
Another common issue is a malfunctioning valve or relay switch. This can result in issues that will either shut down the press or slow it down considerably.
It is also wise to listen out for any unusual noises or changes in the machine. Doing this can help you identify minor issues early and avoid major ones in the future.
