How to Fill Hydraulic Press With Oil

Hydraulic presses are machines that utilize hydraulic fluid to generate mechanical power, consisting of a pump, two end plates, and a piston.
Knowledge of how to fill your hydraulic press with the appropriate oil will ensure it works safely, protecting materials from being damaged and guaranteeing safe operations of the machine.
Filling Positions
Hydraulic presses exert great force, and can be used to form metal work pieces quickly and more reliably than mechanical presses. They also allow greater tonnage control during press stroke.
Hydraulic pressure is measured in pounds per square inch (psi), while its force can be calculated by multiplying piston area by pressure and then dividing that figure by 2,000 to get its total tonnage value.
Oil leaks from piston oil seals, pump plungers or release valve rods are a serious fire hazard and need to be properly maintained in order to remain operational. Causes for these oil leaks could range from loose packing nuts, contaminated check balls or worn packing to worn packing itself leaking oil out into the environment. It's essential that their maintenance remains in good order as any potential fire hazards exist in their form of fire hazards such as Mobil DTE-25 or Mobile Vactra 100 machine oil being added through opening gearbox covers lubricant reservoir is filled as it should.
Filling Valve
Filling valves are switching valves that accurately and quantitatively control liquid distribution. Their special structure and sealing design helps avoid dripping while still ensuring flow. There are two types of filling valves: side float and concentric float. For the former, plastic floats on either end of lever are used to open/close, while for latter there is an inner tower-like structure with floating balls used to operate it.
Hydraulic jack oil is the recommended lubricant for filling valves of hydraulic presses. Pour oil until it just below the rim of the fill hole and wipe away any excess. Once full, replace cover plug.
Note that only hydraulic jack oil should be used in your press, and not motor or brake fluid, due to its hydrocarbon-containing nature which could pose health hazards when breathed in by children. Therefore, store this oil safely away from where children can easily gain access.
Filling Cylinder
Hydraulic presses use liquid pressure to process metals, plastics, rubber and powders. This pressure is transmitted via hydraulic cylinders with linear actuators for linear motion; these cylinders are filled with hydraulic fluid (usually oil).
The barrel of a cylinder is constructed using various steels depending on its required strength and ruggedness, closing both ends by means of its cap or bottom as well as a piston rod gland fitted with sliding rings and seals for sealing purposes. A piston separates pressure zones within the cylinder by being fitted with either elastomeric or metal seals that act as bearing elements - these will further safeguard its integrity.
Cylinders come in either single-acting or double-acting varieties, depending on whether or not their purpose is push or pull motion. A single-acting cylinder only features one chamber that receives pressurized hydraulic fluid; typically this chamber lies opposite its respective rod. On its other side is typically spring loaded for retracting applications.
Filling Gearbox
Hydraulic press gearboxes contain many moving parts, and rely on oil for their proper lubrication. As the gears turn continuously, oil helps protect them from excessive friction against each other or themselves and also protects against metal-to-metal contact at high temperatures which could otherwise result in costly damages to gears.
If your gearbox is leaking oil, loosen the drain plug and allow the excess fluid to drain out. If your drain hole contains a washer that needs renewing, inspect for signs of wear before replacing it.
Remove the cover plate, fill your gearbox with hydraulic jack oil until it reaches just below the rim of its fill hole, replace the filler plug, wipe away any excess oil around its edge and tighten back up your plate before using a hydraulic jack to lift your press safely without risk of damaging its mechanism. However, make sure that its level is changed regularly as otherwise it could clog your system up further.
