Hydraulic presses are indispensable tools in many industries. They assist operators with fitting, bending and assembling sheet metal parts, bearings and equipment.

These presses operate by applying pressure to a hydraulic pump that propels a steel cylinder into materials with an exacting force. There are various types and sizes of presses available to meet different application needs.

Hydraulic Pump

Before installing a new hydraulic pump in your shop press, it is necessary to bleed it first. Bleeding an apparatus helps eliminate air that might have become trapped within its system.

Additionally, it allows you to check the fluid level and remove any contaminants present in the lines. Doing so will improve efficiency within your hydraulic system and protect components from wear.

To bleed your hydraulic pump, begin by finding a flat and level surface where you can work safely. Also, clear away any parts or components that might be blocking access to your lines.

Cylinder

A hydraulic shop press utilizes a hydraulic cylinder to generate pressure that is used for various tasks like forging, moulding and metal working. The cylinder is the central part of the machine located inside the pressing area; it is connected to the main ram by way of a hydraulic fluid jet activated by hand movement that causes it to lower itself, producing maximum pressing force.

Bleeding air from the hydraulic system is essential to ensure it functions optimally and safely; air can erode metal seals and damage the cylinder itself through cavitation, or capillarization - which is when small vapour-filled bubbles form under low pressure conditions.

To bleed a hydraulic shop press cylinder, begin by parking it on an even surface; this will help release trapped air and make it easier to work with. Next, extend the cylinder fully and leave for several minutes until all air has naturally risen to the top; then open the bleed valve at the top to allow hydraulic fluid to flow freely.

Hydraulic Hoses

If you've ever taken a hydraulic press or other manufacturing equipment apart for maintenance and cleaning, then you understand the critical need to bleed its hydraulic hoses before beginning work. Failure to do this could result in system malfunction or damage during operation.

To bleed hydraulic hoses in your shop, you'll need the appropriate tools and supplies. Additionally, clean fluid and tubing are necessary.

To bleed hydraulic hoses, the ideal approach is to work on a level surface. This makes it simpler for you to access the lines that need bled.

To expedite the job of bleeding lines or cylinders, begin at the furthest point and work inward with those closest to the pump last. Doing this makes the task quicker and more efficient.

Pressure Gauge

Maintaining your hydraulic shop press's pressure gauge is essential to keep it operating optimally. Doing this allows you to monitor any building pressure within the system and avert costly downtime.

Bourdon tube pressure gauges use a curved tube to measure the pressure of gases and liquids, as illustrated in Figure 5. As the internal bourdon tube straightens due to changes in pressure, its link transfers this motion onto a sector gear meshing with a pinion which turns a shaft connected to a pointer.

A Bourdon tube gauge is typically programmed to measure a specific range of pressures. Routine adjustments must be made on these gauges in order to correct Zero Error and Multiplication Error, which occur when the total movement of the mechanism does not match up with changes in input.
