How to Make a Hydraulic Forging Press Dies

Forging presses are machines that utilize vertical rams to apply pressure gradually to a die holding a metal piece, creating uniform plastic deformation and making the material easier to work with.
Mechanical forging presses are large machines capable of forging large metal pieces such as aircraft parts. To shape them, these presses use either open or closed dies that enclose the metal to be formed into shape.
The Die Set
Die sets consist of flat ground metal plates which serve as mounting surfaces for all working die components, as well as guide pins or bushings to maintain proper alignment between plates. This prevents problems caused by deflection such as cutting sections breaking, punches chipping away or failing altogether and the inability to produce qualified parts.
Heel blocks are steel plates attached to both ends of die shoes to absorb one-directional side thrust that could cause misalignment, and to secure and locate heel components and die sections. Screws, dowels and keys may be needed as additional means to do this work.
Die sets come with two kinds of dies: taps and dies. Taps create internal threads in holes while dies create external threads on cylindrical material like rods - for instance you would use this combination set to make bolt threads! In mechanical forging presses they produce large, complex parts such as automotive parts, oilfield equipment, tools & hardware and military ordnance.
The Ram
Forging press machines utilize mechanical, hydraulic or servo motors to produce the force needed to shape metal parts. They use a ram to apply pressure to a die containing the workpiece and form it into its desired form. In contrast to traditional hammer and anvil methods of shaping metal parts, forging presses operate at much slower rates while using more squeeze-squeezing techniques than impact deformation to achieve their purpose.
Forging presses produce parts such as bolts, nuts, rivets, screws, brake levers and bearing races made of metal that cannot be formed using this process; for instance cast iron, chromium and tungsten cannot be forge forged using this process. These forging parts can be found in automobiles and aerospace equipment among many applications.
Mechanical forging presses employ a flywheel that stores energy to drive a crank mechanism and can produce up to 12,000 tons of force. A screw press operates similarly, using a mechanical screw to convert rotational motion into vertical movement for its ram. These types of presses can be used both open die forgings and closed die forgings.
The Hydraulic System
Hydraulic systems consist of various parts that work together to produce power. Their primary principle is that force applied at one location gets transmitted through an incompressible fluid such as oil to another location through hydraulic lines; then this force multiplies. A hydraulic cylinder serves as the working piston during forging process while an oil tank and manual control valve provide access.
Forging is a slow process that allows the ram to penetrate deeply into the die and produce uniform plastic deformation, making forging an excellent choice for metals that require close tolerances or intricate designs, eliminating multiple blows altogether.
To create a basic hydraulic system, start by taking two cylinders - one large and one smaller - and placing them inside another cylinder with tape for support. Fill both cylinders with water before adding another piece of tape on either end of the larger cylinder where you want it lowered.
The Safety Devices
Forging is a metal-shaping process that employs gradual, controlled pressure to shape metal workpieces in a die. This method provides quicker and less expensive production methods than using the old hammer-and-anvil method; and is an increasingly popular production solution used for automotive, agricultural equipment, tools & hardware, military ordnance production as well as various other uses.
Forged metals possess reduced metallurgical defects such as porosity and alloy segregation. Furthermore, forged metals feature superior strengths such as strength, ductility, design flexibility and heat treatment responsiveness, while offering complex shapes without the need for additional machining processes.
Mechanical forging presses use a flywheel to store energy for movement of a crank mechanism attached to a ram and can produce up to 12,000 tons of force. Larger hydraulic presses have direct electric drive with reversing motor and are capable of creating 75,000 tons of force; additionally they include manual control valves to allow users to manage operation as well as pressure gauges.
