How to Make a Ring Using a Hydraulic Press
time:2023-05-17 views:(点击 1,083 次)Hydraulic presses use liquid pressure to produce mechanical power. A hydraulic press consists of two interconnected cylinders--a slave and master cylinder filled with hydraulic fluid--connected by pipes filled with pressure from one another and linked by pipes that carry that pressure upstream towards its target cylinder, whereby pressure from the slave cylinder travels and causes its pressure level to increase and force it upward.
Hydraulic presses play a pivotal role in fabrication and assembly processes across a range of industries, providing operators with tools for fitting sheet metal, bearings, equipment or parts together. Their capacities and styles may differ considerably but all feature similar basic designs.
Choosing a Die
Hydraulic presses can be invaluable tools for metalsmiths. Not only can they punch out identical pieces much faster than metal shears, they can also produce shapes impossible to cut with metal shears. A hydraulic press can also make great tools for making unique ring blanks for bracelets or cuffs as well as creating other complicated items which would otherwise take too much work to produce by hand.
As a starting point, a silhouette die that is larger than the piece of metal to be puffed is ideal. Note that this type of die does not cut away or "cut out" shapes but rather forces puffing of metal through an opening in it into negative spaces in its die.
Attach the matrix to Plate A with doublestick tape and position the punch in the middle of Plate B, placing a piece of masonite or plexiglass between it and the die surface to protect from marring, and use silicone or release agent for optimal lubrication between both elements.
Preparing the Metal
No matter the metal you're working with, surface preparation is an integral step for producing an impeccable weldable result. This involves cleaning off contaminants like mill scale, rust, copper slag or paint from the surface as well as fitting and beveling base material accordingly.
One of the easiest and fastest ways to prepare metal is with cutting tools such as torch/plasma cutters, shears or CNC tables. These cutting devices offer quick cuts with small kerfs - saving both time and money by eliminating preheating requirements.
However, these tools can be costly and require special training to use effectively. Instead, a bolt together hydraulic press frame can be easily assembled for less than $50 by threading two washers and nuts onto either end of a piece of threaded stock before assembling as shown below. You'll be surprised how strong and resilient these frames are: they can support up to 3500 pounds of pressure!
Pressing the Metal
Hydraulic presses use cylinders to generate force for punching through metal much faster and with greater control than manual or mechanical presses, thanks to hydraulic fluid-filled cylinders filled with slave cylinder pistons which can be moved by input levers to generate mechanical force.
Force from this source is transferred to a master cylinder larger than its slave counterpart and used to apply an immense amount of pressure onto the metal being deformed or deformed into shape by pressing. This method of shaping and deforming metal can be utilized for various tasks such as forming, clinching, molding, blanking and deep drawing.
In this course, you will gain knowledge on how to safely and effectively use a hydraulic press. You will discover its essential operations while learning how to create and use dies; develop new techniques for piercing shapes; and how silhouette dies can create elegantly-shaped forms.
Cleaning the Die
For most materials, no prior lubrication or biners are required before use; however, adding some may help reduce friction and cracking when pressing or releasing so it may be beneficial to apply some on the outer surface of the die.
A hydraulic press is a large metal frame into which a hydraulic car jack can be used to apply localized pressure on dies, using 3-dimensional models or patterns as guides for mold male and female dies conforming to shape to match the model and each other, then sheet metal is pressed between them using hydraulic pressure. Industrially, these presses can generate tremendous force - up to 3 million pounds per square inch pressure can be generated - enough to rip apart even the strongest metals! However, novice users should avoid such equipment; safer solutions such as using jigs can simplify forming processes considerably.
