How to Measure a Hydraulic Press

Hydraulic presses are powerful machines that use compressed fluid to generate force. Consisting of two interconnecting cylinders joined by pistons, these hydraulic presses utilize compressed fluid in order to achieve their forceful force production.
Pascal's Law governs how hydraulic presses function; pressure is evenly disseminated within any fluid confined within it. Force applied by the press can be measured using a manometer.
1. Diameter of the Ram
A hydraulic press exerts great force. A 20-ton hydraulic press can squeeze an object as heavy as three elephants, although how much pressure is generated ultimately depends on where that force applies.
One of the key components in selecting a hydraulic press is making sure its ram diameter meets your part sizes and applications. For instance, when pressing small parts that can easily become damaged by large presses, using a smaller ram may be necessary to avoid damage to those delicate pieces.
Be mindful that hydraulic pressure is measured in pounds per square inch (psi), which equals force applied times piston area. To convert this reading to force, divide by the piston area and multiply by 2,000. This calculation can help you select an appropriate tonnage for your hydraulic press as well as choose adjustable switches to control how far back the ram reverses as well as timers to set dwell time at the bottom of its stroke.
2. Length of the Ram
Hydraulic presses exert thousands of pounds of force, which makes them the go-to tools in industrial metal forming operations such as forming, drawing, blanking and punching that require high force and precision.
Due to their inherent versatility, hydraulic presses can be custom designed to suit a range of specifications, including programmable controls that manage speed and stroke of the ram as well as dwell timers and other functions.
To accurately gauge the force of a hydraulic press, a manometer or pressure gauge should be used to read pressure in PSI units (psi). After reading PSI readings from your manometer/pressure gauge, multiply them by piston area in order to convert to tons. A 2,000-ton press can produce 20 million pounds of force which is sufficient to crush an automobile or three elephants! In order to prevent damage caused by exceeding set pressure settings (when pressure of fluid exceeds internal piston diameter), there is also an overload protection system installed to stop its use when this can happen and prevents its cylinder from surpassing set pressure settings by using overload protection system built-in into your press' overload protection system which prevents it cylinder from exceeding set pressure settings that could occur due to fluid pressure exceeding internal piston diameter limits or leaks.
3. Length of the Cylinder
Hydraulic presses feature an extendable and retractable cylinder, and its length should be measured using a tape measure. If operational equipment is present, follow manufacturer and company lockout tagout procedures and safety precautions so you can safely measure these dimensions.
Diameter of Cylinders | Bore Diameter Calculating the diameter of a cylinder requires knowledge and calculation; you can achieve this by measuring outer barrel diameter and subtracting thicknesses of both tubing walls from it.
Knowing the piston diameter, along with its retracted and extended lengths, allows you to determine the stroke of a cylinder. As force equals force per area (F=PA), force is used as an equation to calculate its rated pressure; just make sure that you have enough hydraulic pressure available!
4. Length of the Platens
Strength is one of the key mechanical properties of materials, and mechanical engineers typically focus on measuring it through various methods such as tensile, compressive and shear strength measurements. To test these properties they often crush or compress materials - this is where hydraulic presses come into play!
Heated platens are an integral component of hydraulic presses, and Custom Engineering is an industry leader when it comes to producing heated platens in sizes as small as 12" square for laminating applications or as wide as 60' for manufacturing conveyor belting.
There are various kinds of hydraulic presses designed to meet specific forming applications. When choosing the ideal tonnage for your application, selecting an accurate tonnage is key - excess energy use and tool wear could result in excessive costs and wear on tooling. To help determine your ideal tonnage, consult with professionals who offer comprehensive consultation and support; they may recommend appropriate heated platens that will maximize productivity and extend platen life as well as refurbish existing platens for greater productivity and longer lifespan.
