Can You Break a Diamond With a Hydraulic Press?

Diamonds may not last forever, but it would take considerable force and pressure for one to break. You would need to hit it exactly at its weak point to cause its collapse.
People often conflate hardness with strength; for instance, diamond is extremely hard, yet this doesn't equate to strength - even a powerful hammer wouldn't be enough to break one apart!
Hardness
Diamonds may be famously hard, yet that doesn't equate to indestructibility. Even its hard surface can be cracked by sudden and extreme force; in a new video uploaded to Hydraulic Press Channel, a 1.2-carat diamond was broken in an hydraulic press press.
To understand this phenomenon, we must first understand how a diamond is formed. Its atoms are tightly packed together into an extremely difficult lattice-like structure that resists movement; yet when hit hard enough by an impact force such as cutting by jewelers, its structure may fracture. When this occurs, weak spots known as the "cleave line" become exposed resulting in weak points being created where cutting occurs.
Diamonds can be damaged by striking them with hard objects like hammers. This impacts breaks apart their atomic structures and leaves scratches visible under a microscope.
Tensile strength
Diamonds may be among the hardest natural substances on Earth, but that doesn't make them indestructible - even with just one light hit of a hammer, even they can be broken apart!
Tensile strength refers to the ability of materials to resist breaking under tension stress. It's measured by force applied per unit cross-sectional area; and reached when elastic deformation gives way to permanent plastic deformation.
Hydraulic Press Channel, an immensely popular YouTube channel, is well-known for putting random objects through a hydraulic press and recording their results. They've broken everything from Nokia phones and bowling balls to toys - but now they decided to test out nature's toughest material: diamond. Their video seems misleading though as only a larger, specialized hydraulic press would be sufficient to crush this gem.
Impact strength
Diamonds are known for being extremely hard, yet withstand tremendous amounts of pressure without succumbing to crushing blows such as from hammers or breaking under chemicals or extreme heat. But while these hard materials may withstand tremendous amounts of force, that doesn't make them indestructible; powerful blows from such as hammers could still break or chip them apart over time.
Breaking a diamond would require considerable force, such as striking it with a hammer or crushing it with hydraulic press, due to the carbon atoms' arrangement in an extremely strong lattice held together by chemical bonds.
However, the forces necessary to break a diamond can far exceed what can typically be used in home shops or hydraulic presses. This is because highly specialized machinery designed to produce extremely high temperatures can generate over 200,000 pounds of pressure, enough to break even one of Earth's hardest materials - diamond!
Breaking strength
Diamonds are widely recognized for being among the hardest naturally-occurring materials. Scoring 10 on Mohs scale, no other gemstone or metal can scratch them; furthermore they possess high tensile strength (thus making them useful as jewelry pieces). Unfortunately, under sufficient pressure diamonds can actually break under pressure; one YouTube hydraulic press channel even demonstrated this by placing a 1.2 carat diamond into their machine before watching it shatter instantly!
People often confuse "hardness" and "toughness", as HARDNESS refers to its resistance to scratches while TOUGHNESS measures how well materials resist breakage when subjected to forceful impact; diamond's tightly packed atomic structure explains both of these qualities in equal measure - as does its lack of toughness!
