Common Hydraulic Press Automation System Problems

Hydraulic presses are powerful pieces of machinery that can cause serious injury to anyone near them if not kept up to date.
Maintaining pressure requires a tightly sealed circuit, especially if the press system utilizes another fluid than pure air.
Motor Failure
Hydraulic press automation systems often experience motor failure. Conducting an accurate root cause analysis of this issue is essential, as it can help avoid future issues and minimize downtime.
Hydraulic presses are systems filled with fluid or gas that moves to create pressure, enabling the press to lift and move pieces of equipment. Unfortunately, there can be various malfunctions which could ultimately result in its failure.
Overloading is one of the leading causes of motor failure. To ensure your safety, inspect the motor for signs of overloading on a regular basis.
Another pressing problem is excessive heat. Excessive warmth can damage the insulation of a motor, drastically decreasing its service life.
To avoid this from occurring, facilities should strive to keep their motor operating environment as cool as possible. Furthermore, inspecting the insulation on a regular basis for signs of deterioration can help detect this issue early on.
Sensor Failure
Sensors are essential elements in any hydraulic press automation system. They monitor the output from the motor, power supply and pump as well as detect fluid presence - an essential safety measure in hydraulic presses.
No matter the type of sensor, there are common failures that can arise. One such issue is contamination on the sensing face.
Dirt or dust particles in the sensor can interfere with sensing. Another type of obstruction is obstructive view failure, which occurs when objects block the sensing face.
Test speed sensor signals with a graphing voltmeter or scope to identify any glitches, low signal output, or intermittent signal dropouts - these are often the first indications of sensor malfunction.
Power Supply Failure
Power supply failure is the leading cause of hydraulic press automation system malfunction. This typically occurs when the power supply circuit fails to convert Alternating Current (AC) from a corded wall outlet into Direct Current (DC) for each individual component in the system.
This condition is usually the result of one or more factors:
High Fluid Temperature : Hydraulic presses dissipate heat from their pumps, valves, and other components through fluid reservoirs, pumps, and heat exchangers. Make sure the level of your hydraulic press's reservoir is correct and free from debris to ensure optimal press performance.
Noise & Leakage:
Hydraulic systems can be noisy due to pump motors, fluid velocity, aeration, cavitation and valves. They also leak due to poor system design, substandard component quality, improper installation or abuse - either individually or in combination.
Pump Failure
One of the most frequent problems a hydraulic press automation system may encounter is pump failure. Recognizing and addressing potential causes and solutions will help ensure your equipment runs optimally for years to come.
The most likely indication that your pump is malfunctioning is when it begins making unusual noises or showing excessive vibration. This could indicate loose set screws, failed bearings, or debris trapped inside the pump.
Another sign that your pump may be failing is when it stops producing pressure. This can occur for various reasons, but usually indicates something is wrong with the impellers.
Oil leaks from a pump plunger or release valve rod are another common problem that may cause your hydraulic press to malfunction. These are highly hazardous and pose a fire hazard, so make sure you inspect your pump for oil leaks on a regular basis.
