Hydraulic presses are widely used across a range of industries due to their versatility and adaptability to meet different production and assembly requirements.

They're easy to maintain and reliable, but can suffer from various issues that could negatively affect the quality of your work.

1. Cylinder Leaks

Hydraulic presses are powerful tools, capable of shaping metal components and performing other tasks. Unfortunately, the equipment may develop leaks or other issues which could result in productivity loss and downtime.

Commonly, these issues arise due to equipment damage or improper usage of the machine, such as using incorrect oil type and overheating. If left unchecked, incorrect oil usage can cause chemical breakdown in seals and eventually lead to leaks.

Leaks can also be caused by dirt, water, or other contaminants in the hydraulic fluid. When these particles enter into service they cause premature wear and contaminate the lubricant.

Equipment failure and safety hazards are two of the top concerns for manufacturing companies in Cleveland, Columbus, Youngstown, Toledo, Akron, Cincinnati, Rochester (NY), Fort Wayne, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Indianapolis, Chicago, Buffalo, Wheeling St. Louis and Atlanta.

2. Pump Leaks

Hydraulic presses are devices that utilize a pump to convert mechanical energy into hydraulic fluid and force. These systems can be employed to regulate liquid flow and direction in many different applications.

Presses must be designed and constructed according to specific specifications, such as OSHA or ANSI requirements, along with other international norms.

Hydraulic fluid must remain below 180 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid damage to seals and oil oxidation that could lead to leaks. If temperatures rise above this level, oil oxidation will accelerate and may result in catastrophic failure.

If your hydraulic fluid isn't staying within this range, it could be time for a pump check. Loosen the pressure relief valve adjustment as far as possible and connect a pressure gauge. Activate the system; if your fluid still won't dip below 180 degrees Fahrenheit, this indicates an issue with pressure setting.

3. Valve Leaks

Hydraulic presses are large machines designed to compress objects using a ram. These can be utilized for various tasks like cutting, punching, drilling, straightening and molding.

One of the most frequent problems hydraulic press operators face is valve leaks. Not only can these cause equipment inefficiencies that cost a company money, but they can also pollute the environment.

Leaks in hydraulic systems can be caused by oversize, undersized or faulty components. To minimize leakage, it's important to size and select the correct valve according to its intended use.

No matter the cause, valve leakage is a major concern for manufacturers and plant managers. Valves regulate pressure, temperature, flow rate and velocity; if one of them is operating outside its design parameters it can have disastrous results on your operations.

4. Electrical Leaks

Electrical leaks can be hard to detect, but they can have severe repercussions for your business. A malfunctioning electric circuit could send current into places it shouldn't be and cause extensive damage or death to electronic devices.

Furthermore, anyone coming into contact with the leaking device could suffer fires and electric shocks. That is why having an electrical safety switch installed is so critical.

If your press has been leaky for an extended period or your hydraulic system is causing unpredicted and unexplained problems, consider having it repaired by a qualified hydraulic cylinder repair company. Not only will this save you money on repairs but it'll keep operations running smoothly as well.
