Three-inch twirling gadgets that have taken over schools and offices have quickly become the latest craze toy craze. Stores can't keep enough in stock to meet demand from children who hide them from their parents; some schools even forbid their purchase altogether.
Catherine Hettinger of Chemical Engineer invented the fidget spinner in 1993 as an anti-stress toy. Although its designs have since undergone many variations, most still follow its basic template.
How They’re Made
Fidget spinners are handheld concentration toys widely used to help people focus and ease anxiety. A typical fidget spinner consists of a center piece connected by multiple weighted arms. When held between thumb and forefinger and rotated around it creates an almost continuous spinning action, which creates the fidget effect.
Though these toys are widely marketed as concentration aids, some teachers have taken issue with them as distractions and banned the devices altogether.
No matter their effectiveness, fidget spinners have certainly enjoyed immense popularity. From movies and television to big-box stores and specialty boutiques selling them and even celebrities like Drake and Justin Bieber wearing them - spinners have become ubiquitous. YouTube and Instagram users frequently post videos and pics showing off impressive tricks with them while even Sea World and Tiffany's have joined in by selling logoed fidget spinners!
The Hydraulic Press
A hydraulic press is a machine that uses fluid pressure to produce force. It consists of two interconnected cylinders, with one larger than the other containing pistons in their smaller cylinder. Pressing down on one piston causes all of its liquid content from slave cylinder to move into master cylinder and create intense forces.
Hydraulic presses use hydraulic force to shape and mold materials for various uses. They're often employed for making automobile parts such as doors and fenders; additionally they can even help produce household appliances like dishwashers or microwaves.
Another novel application of hydraulic presses is sword-making. They allow metal sheets to be compressed into their desired shapes for sword making, with its high density metal making it resilient enough to withstand substantial amounts of pressure. Therefore, hydraulic presses have become essential pieces of equipment in many workshops and repair shops alike.
The Needle
When considering the latest trend to sweep schools worldwide, one image that may come to mind is of a three-sided propeller gadget with multiple fingers spinning at once: this is known as a fidget spinner and it has quickly become ubiquitous and distracting.
Some teachers contend that spinners can be an unnecessary distraction that disrupts concentration and leads to ADHD-like behavior in students, while others use them as an attention-enhancing tool that helps kids with autism or ADHD better focus their attention.
Apart from being an entertaining toy, fidget spinners are also an effective way to develop fine motor skills. Studies have revealed how manipulating small objects such as beads or coins can increase coordination and dexterity; so it makes sense that repetitive manipulation of fidget spinners could produce similar benefits. Indeed, chemical engineer Catherine Hettinger filed a patent application in 1993 in hopes that creating something like the fidget spinner would help people focus their energies and channel it appropriately.
The Coins
Fidget spinners may not only be entertaining toys for kids to use, but they may also be useful tools in aiding concentration in school. While these toys can be found everywhere online and at department stores alike, some schools have even banned them!
Scott McCoskery and Paul de Herrera, two entrepreneurs attempting to capitalise on the fidget spinner craze, work in a converted 2,000-square-foot garage assembling fidget spinners as its popularity skyrockets. Their goal is to secure their design's patent before sending cease-and-desist letters to copycat manufacturers while reaching licensing agreements with larger ones.
Make your own simple fidget spinner using paper and coins with this tutorial from HawkGuruHacker, cutting into an empty soda can (young children may require adult supervision for this step). Plus, this DIY toy teaches children the value of recycling!
