How to Make a Hydraulic Juice Press

Hydraulic juice presses provide the ideal way to preserve maximum nutrition from fruits and vegetables. They use extreme pressure (up to 2 tons!) to extract juice from pressed pulp and recover its precious juice content.
These expensive juicers provide high-grade juice that is used in Gerson Therapy and other forms of juicing methods.
1. Trituration
Trituration, the first step of hydraulic juicing, entails breaking down raw fruits and vegetables into a mash-like consistency by cutting, shredding and grinding until everything is finely milled - this allows the body to more readily absorb essential vitamins and minerals more quickly and easily. Once this step is completed, the prepared mash is transferred into cloth- or linen-lined bags or trays and placed inside a hydraulic juice press section of the machine; under pressure exerted by this section the pressure force releases juice along with vital vitamins and nutrients.
Homeopathy remedies often make use of the mash-like substance produced through trituration, known as centesimal trituration. To create such a preparation, an original sample must first be weighed and mixed with an inert powder such as lactose in an approximate 99 times dilution ratio, before being ground in a mortar and pestle until its particles match those present in its source sample.
S. Hahnemann pioneered this method for producing medicines, known as centesimal trituration, which differs significantly from other techniques for reducing the size of solid pharmaceutical compounds. For instance, other approaches like comminution or disintegration involve physically crushing or pulverizing drug material which may damage it; centesimal trituration uses similar grinding mechanisms, but instead employs a revolving shearing action rather than beating action for grinding medical ingredients down to size.
Trituration increases solubility of sparingly-soluble RSM particles and ultimately enhances medicinal properties in remedies, hence why centesimal trituration is used when creating homeopathic mother tinctures.
There are various kinds of hydraulic juice presses on the market, ranging from manual models such as People's Press to electric two-step machines like PURE Juicer or Norwalk Juicer that feature both an initial grinder and second pressing stage that are more efficient than traditional centrifugal or masticating juicers.
2. Pressing
As its name implies, hydraulic juicers use hydraulic pressure to extract juice from raw fruits and vegetables. Its two-step process differs significantly from single-auger or centrifugal types that use spinning blades and screens to separate juice from pulp. Trituration, the initial stage in hydraulic juicing process is used to prepare produce before pressing with up to 2-ton pressure by pressing portion. Press portion then exerts immense force against this mash extracting juice as nutrients from its pulp mass.
Hydraulic juicers introduce minimal air during the extraction of juice, thus protecting delicate nutrients from oxidation and degradation. As a result, hydraulic juicers create juice with superior texture and taste that other types of juicers simply can't match - these features make hydraulic juicers more costly than their competitors; but their high nutritional value and healthy, delicious results more than make up for their additional expense.
At present, only two types of hydraulic juicers are commercially available: PURE Juicer and the Norwalk Juicer (now only sold as used machines without warranty). Unfortunately neither are affordable for many consumers - however you can build your own hydraulic press at a much more reasonable cost!
To create your own homemade hydraulic juice press, you will require plywood that measures at least 40mm in thickness and glue it together into a block that fits your hydraulic jack. A flange should then be attached around the edge of this block that will accommodate your juice tray; once secured onto it is a piece of metal that will act as the piston that will be powered by your hydraulic jack.
As Amazon provides fully assembled hydraulic juicers, it may also be convenient to purchase one. But building your own will allow you the freedom of customizing its size, dimensions and selecting an optimal hydraulic press jack based on your individual needs. Should you choose the latter option however, be sure to read and follow all applicable user manuals in order to ensure successful setup and operation of the machine.
3. Filtration
Filtration is the separation of solids from liquids or gases by passing them through a filter medium designed to capture them while the fluid passes through (see figure below). Solids may either be dissolvable or particulate in nature and any liquid passing through is called filtrate; the process itself can be physical, chemical, biological, or mechanical in nature.
Filtration can be accomplished easily using gravity. Filtered liquid will flow downward through a filter paper filter into a beaker placed below, collecting in one flow as it travels down through. Filtration can also be achieved using pressure difference; higher liquid side pressure speeds up flow rates through, but this could result in clogging or passage of fine solid particles through filter.
Filtration techniques involving porous materials as the filter medium are a popular approach to filtration, such as paper, cloth, cotton-wool, asbestos, slag- or glass-wool, unglazed earthenware, sand and any other natural or synthetic porous materials with pores large enough for solids to pass through them. Pore size determines permeability and thus size of solids passing through.
As liquid passes through a filter, smaller solids will be trapped while larger ones will be absorbed by its material, creating what is known as "sorption filtration," producing clear filtrate as it passes. This technique is also utilized in chromatography.
Producing juice with a hydraulic press juicer like the Norwalk is of much higher quality than with centrifugal or masticating machines due to introducing minimal air into its extraction process and thus limiting oxidation and degradation of nutrients.
Nutritious juice produced using this method can be stored for long periods without losing freshness or flavor, similar to pasteurized commercial fruit and vegetable juices. Unfortunately, however, the process is more labor-intensive and costly compared to centrifugal or masticating juicers; yet it does offer unique benefits like providing access to a wider variety of juices not possible with other types of juicers.
4. Storage
Hydraulic juice presses are unique types of juicers that utilize extreme pressure to extract liquid from raw fruits and vegetables, producing highly nutritious and flavorful juices that may last longer than traditional cold-pressed or centrifugal juices.
Trituration, the initial step in hydraulic juicing machine operation, involves cutting, shredding, and grinding produce to form a pulp that can easily be extracted. Once formed, this mass is stored in linen- or cloth-lined bags or trays and loaded into the hydraulic juicer's press portion; there high levels of pressure (up to 6,000 pounds!) are exerted upon it in order to release its juice as well as nutrients that provide essential health benefits.
Pressed vegetable juice contains essential vitamins, minerals, and enzymes that bind to pulp during harvesting and are released through hydraulic press process. Once consumed by our body these nutrients quickly assimilated for healing and detoxifying of our entire system.
Hydraulic juice presses may be more expensive than other types of juicers, but they provide superior nutrient retention and extraction efficiency. They're even recommended by Dr. Max Gerson of Gerson Therapy - an alternative cancer treatment - who created these juicers himself! There are currently two hydraulic models on the market - PURE Juicer and Norwalk Juicer.
Before purchasing a hydraulic juicer, several key factors should be kept in mind before making your final decision. Beyond price considerations, consider looking for sturdy construction with easily washable parts such as stainless steel bases and bodies to provide extra durability against corrosion. Also look out for removable parts so that maintenance and cleaning can be handled more easily in the future; additionally purchasing one with an extended warranty will give added peace of mind.
