How to Make a Small Hydraulic Press

Hydraulic presses are used in factories to perform metal working operations such as forming, punching, deep drawing and coining quickly and efficiently. They help speed up setup and changeover processes significantly.
An affordable hydraulic press can be made using an ordinary bottle jack that you would use to change a car tire. A few parts will need to be cut for assembly of its basic frame.
Frame
Hydraulic presses are machines capable of applying enormous pressure to materials like metal or plastic, such as for crushing, straightening, moulding and other metal-forming processes. While such machines can be expensive to purchase and usually only found in large industrial settings; homemade hydraulic presses can easily be built using ordinary bottle jacks used to change car tires as an inexpensive alternative.
At first, a frame must be constructed to support and mount the cylinder. This structure typically comprises 2x4 boards with spreader bars glued and nailed together; then an air hole is drilled in the top of this structure to allow air to escape as the cylinder compresses. Once complete, an adjustable platform affixed to the press's base using eye bolts, large fender washers, and hex nuts is attached and secured into place; these help ensure its level during compression/deflation cycles.
After creating the press itself, a blast shield made out of Lexan is constructed - the same plastic used to construct bulletproof windows. This step is essential when working with whistle or strobe rocket motors that use pressure sensitive fuels as pressing safety should always be the number one concern.
Platen
A hydraulic press is a machine used to apply mechanical pressure against workpieces in order to form, compress or otherwise shape them. Additionally, this tool may be used to form molds, bond materials or crush items such as metal and plastic blanks. Hydraulic, pneumatic, electric or steam power may be utilized; various kinds of hydraulic presses exist with specific uses in mind such as H-frame and platen presses that often produce rubber products, composites or printed circuit boards.
Platen presses are hydraulic presses which use flat steel or cast iron plates called "platens" to apply pressure to molds and create the final molded product. They may be heated using oil, water or steam heating sources in order to increase material temperature enough for shaping purposes and make it malleable enough for formation. Their design also facilitates easy maintenance and cleaning for efficient operations.
The platens are supported on a frame equipped with a vertical central ram 38, featuring two distinct end portions; an initial lower fixed portion 40 which fastens to the bolster plate 32 for movement of the upper platen 30 and an upper free end portion 42 that sits within a passage 44 in the crosshead 24 when in its operating position and clears it when retracting; these ends connect via pins fastened to each bolster plate 32 to be fastened onto an upper fixed end portion 42 of this ram.
These cylinders can be controlled to move platens between an operating position suitable for starting compression operations and a retracted position in which reaction member and moving platen are sufficiently separated so products may be installed or removed from molds, and then back together again after having come into contact with upper platen.
Are You Building a Hydraulic Press from Scratch? If so, these components will be necessary. Step one is cutting all required metal parts for the frame and platens - wearing work gloves may help protect your hands from sharp edges during cutting to prevent injury! Once cutting has been completed, drilling holes for bolts and nuts is next on the agenda.
Assemble your hydraulic press using the instructions included in your kit. After assembly, check it for leaks and ensure pressure distribution among all platens is even. If any questions arise during this step, feel free to reach out for advice from local DIY experts.
