Hydraulic apple presses can be an invaluable asset in any large garden, as they increase juice yield while saving both time and effort.
This press is easy and cost-effective to create; all materials needed can be found around your house/garden/shed. You can create one without spending much.
Frame
Nothing beats a refreshing glass of freshly-pressed apple cider! Making your own or purchasing it from a cider mill requires work, but the results are well worth your efforts. Apples, pears and even grapes can be used in producing this delectable beverage; using a hydraulic press is an efficient way to reduce manual labor while increasing production faster - just ensure its solid frame can withstand pressure from its hydraulic jack! It can easily be constructed out of materials found around your house or yard.
To assemble the frame, you will require several tools as well as sturdy wood. It should be strong enough to withstand pressure applied by both hydraulic jack and basket and must also be insect- and rot-proof for best results and ensures that apple juice will remain free from impurities.
Once your wooden frame is assembled, it's time to sanitize and start your first batch of cider. Sanitizing all surfaces that come into contact with fruit (including the grinder wheel) to prevent cross contamination and ensure safe juice for drinking. After your apple grinder has been cleaned it's time to grind up apples into pulp!
Pulp should then be collected into a bucket and secured with cloth to prevent it from escaping the basket. Its bottom should then be placed on top of a board at an equivalent height as your car jack, which will distribute its force evenly without crushing your bucket.
Next, place a bucket of pulp into a frame. With that done, a hydraulic jack can be lowered onto its base to begin pressing, until eventually compressing the basket until full and releasing pressure to allow removal from frame. Although not edible, this pulp may be useful as acidifying fertilizer for plants like rhododendrons and azaleas.
Basket
Hydraulic apple presses provide an efficient and effective means of creating cider. By extracting as much juice from crushed apples as quickly as possible, a hydraulic press provides an outstanding yield with little hassle or mess. Requiring some power but relatively straightforward use compared to basket presses, they require much less room and can even be made yourself using readily available materials - an enjoyable DIY project that you'll be enjoying this autumn!
As your first step in building your hydraulic apple press, the first step should be preparing its wooden base. To determine its dimensions, measure both the height of your desired bucket and two vertical beams on your frame - this ensures that both will fit between them without gaping gaps between.
Start by cutting 14 drain slats for the basket and drainage channel, measuring identically but with squared edges instead of beveled edges. Predrill each slat at 1-3/4" from each end so it can accept screws from both hoops, this will help prevent wood splitting during pressing process; you should then sand all edges with #220 sandpaper; finally drill a series of 38 holes (1-1/4" apart starting 5/8" from each end), using cutting fluid as your bit.
You can purchase pre-drilled oak slats for use with drain and baking trays if that suits your preference. While this saves time, their pre-drilled holes might not withstand as much pressure; to maximize juice yield it is recommended that these slats be made of kiln-dried hardwood such as maple or fir as opposed to pre-drilled oak.
To operate the hydraulic apple press, simply place a bucket and baking tray of crushed apples into its basket, followed by placing wooden blocks either side of its piston to support it and place a hydraulic jack over them to apply pressure - taking note to not exceed 30 PSI home water pressure!
Piston
If you want to produce large volumes of cider, a hydraulic apple press is indispensable. Not only can it save effort and strain from making multiple cider batches at once, it can also be used for pressing other fruits such as pears for pear cider (perry). Constructing one is straightforward with items lying around your house/garden/shed; beginner builders are welcome too!
Hydraulic apple presses utilise a cylinder-shaped piston which is filled with water to increase press pressure during pressing cycles and maximize juice yield, offering an ideal alternative to rack and cloth presses which require physical effort and time investment.
It is crucial that the piston of a hydraulic jack be designed to withstand its pressure, and can be disassembled for cleaning. Furthermore, using high-grade water supply hose is recommended; otherwise it could leak or even burst under its stress.
The frame should be constructed of sturdy material such as oak to withstand the force of a hydraulic jack and be easy to clean in between uses. It should feature a sturdy base as well as several slatted supports which can be adjusted according to the slope of your trough, with gaps as close together as possible in order to minimize peel and core fragments from entering juice production process.
Hydraulic jacks should be of superior quality to increase the amount of pressure applied during pressing cycles, using long handles for maximum pressure application to apples. Leather gloves would be preferable as plastic ones tend to rub against each other more, leading to blisters on hands.
After your frame is assembled and fitted with its slatted basket, it's ready for use. Fill the slatted basket with freshly mashed apples before fitting it to the frame top. Line your trough with baking paper lined with holes pierced for juice drainage into an overhanging baking tray; overhang this baking tray overhang over your bucket for easier accessing cider collection jug. Lower piston onto trough while pumping hydraulic jack to press fruits until all apples have been pressed! Continue this way until all apples have been pressed and all apples pressed and collected!
Hydraulic Jack
Mike Craghead from Instructables used a hydraulic bottle jack from a hardware store to craft this amazing apple press for making cider. A hydraulic jack is an impressive mechanical device capable of creating significant force - enough to lift an automobile! And can be found used for various applications. Instead of using pistons or screws as its source of force generation, however, this tool uses interconnected cylinders filled with hydraulic fluid which are filled and then pumped back out, applying pressure directly onto its plate surface.
The hydraulic jack has six main parts, including the reservoir, pump, check valve, main cylinder and piston. The reservoir stores hydraulic fluid for pumping through to main cylinder. When in there, bar pressure forces fluid upward into main cylinder before its return back through release valve opens to return back into reservoir.
A hydraulic jack operates under Pascal's law, which states that pressure equals force times area. That is to say that when pushing one side of a lever you exert force which is transmitted via hydraulic fluid to its opposite side. As its area grows so does its potential force.
Hydraulic jacks must never be overloaded for proper function; otherwise, their hydraulic seals could become compromised and lead to reduced lifting capacity and even rupture of their cylinder. Overloading can damage their hydraulic seals resulting in reduced lifting capacities or even ruptures in their cylinder.
Finalize assembly by filling your basket with crushed apples, then begin pumping! When the hydraulic jack has generated enough force to crush apple pulp, its juice will flow from the basket down through to a trough underneath the pressing plate and be collected - this is how the juice is collected so it is essential that any press be constructed from food grade materials so as to not taint its taste in any way.
