How to Build a 12 Hydraulic Press Break

Hydraulic presses use a pump and ram to generate force. They work according to Pascal's principle - where modest mechanical force applied over a small area results in greater force when pressure increases across a larger surface area.
Follow in-plant machine lockout procedures to protect the press while performing services or troubleshooting, checking electrical control writing continuity with a multimeter and control schematic.
Basics
As the first step of building a press brake, you must first determine its size and type. Your choice should depend on what kind of work you plan to do; larger or smaller machines may be required depending on this. For inspiration purposes, look at existing machines; also take into account any factors like budgetary considerations and other considerations which could influence this decision to buy new or used press brakes. Once the core frame of your press is assembled, adding bracing and trusses (weld them symmetrically and evenly spaced to reduce heat distortion) can begin adding bracing/trusses; once complete you can lift off its table using either forklift or engine hoist (depending on size).
Tools
If your shop lacks appropriate press brake tooling, even simple jobs may take much longer than they should. While some operators might still produce acceptable parts with inappropriate tools, this method is neither efficient nor repeatable.
To determine what size press brake is right for you, begin by considering the thickness and width of material that needs bending. Next, referring to the chart below, choose your V Die Opening Size from there as this will show how much force is necessary.
Your first decision will be whether to opt for front loading features that reduce setup time by eliminating the need to move tools back and forth between tools. Standard-height tools allow you to quickly add off-the-shelf pieces without needing to adjust the machine; this way you can get bending as soon as your press brake arrives - saving both time and money while optimizing production!
Materials
Your first priority should be finding a press brake designed specifically to meet the work you intend on undertaking. A metal fabricator needs to identify what they intend on using their press brake for before purchasing one that fits.
Know the type of metal that you will be working with as each requires different amounts of force to bend it. In addition, knowing the flange lengths in your finished parts can determine which V-die widths you require for successful production.
Flange length can have an effect on how far apart the side frames need to be, for instance if you need to bend a 3' flange on 10' material, you will require at least 12 feet between its frames; having more distance between frames allows for seamless bending without having to trim and trim again after you bend longer material.
Design
The machine design features a sturdy welded fabrication for minimum deflection. A mechanical punch parallel alignment adjustment system facilitates bending complex pieces. Front arms slide by means of recirculating ball screw guides for improved sheet metal gripping capabilities and the hydraulic unit comes complete with redundant safety valves with optics as well as a manometer to indicate working pressure indication.
So that you can quickly and safely select the appropriate bending force for your job, you can utilize a methacrylate viewing window to observe tool positioning as well as verify hydraulic cylinder position without leaving your workstation.
Solidworks was used to design the reconfigurable hydraulic press brake, while Automation Studio Fluid sim was utilized for simulation purposes. The results from FEA simulation indicate that the hydraulic cylinder has enough strength to prevent distortion in length and section, with stress caused by bending loads being well below yield strength as well as buckling force threshold.
