Die Sets

U.S. coins and medals feature artistic designs pressed directly onto them instead of being etched by hand. To produce dies that stamp obverse and reverse designs onto coins, the Mint uses a blank steel rod with a cone-shaped face called a master hub which contains designs to be stamped into coins; then uses this hub in a slow squeezing process to produce working hubs and dies for stamping the designs into coins.
Squeezing puts considerable strain on dies, which wear down over time. Therefore, when using a hydraulic press it's crucial to know when you have reached your desired reduced size; otherwise it could easily overpress your coin and lead to its details becoming lost on its final product.
