How to Make an Air Over Hydraulic Press

An air over hydraulic press can be an economical and energy efficient alternative to full hydraulic presses. Air is forced into a cylinder before activating the valve; when activated, air pressure pushes a piston downward.
Hydraulic presses are extremely reliable machines capable of handling an array of tasks. Pneumatic presses may be better suited for jobs involving more challenging materials; however, hydraulic presses require regular maintenance as well as devices to monitor oil pressure and efficiency.
The Frame
Hydraulic presses differ from pneumatic presses by employing liquid that moves under pressure instead. A piston presses into an oil-filled chamber, pressurizing the oil, which then exerts force onto either a baseplate or another piston that has been pressed downward.
Hydraulic presses are widely utilized across facilities and industries for manufacturing, assembly and maintenance purposes. Their purpose is to assist workers in fitting parts together and straightening materials - something most types of presses on the market can accomplish with relative ease. All types of hydraulic presses operate similarly: using a pump that creates an amount of force often measured in tons, when activated forces an extendable hydraulic steel cylinder out from its housing which then presses into materials at that specific force level.
Redline industrial 20 ton hydraulic shop press, also referred to as an "air over hydraulic" or "hydro pneumatic" press, is designed for metalworking, auto repair and general manufacturing applications. With both manual operation and compressed air power sources available for power, this press offers greater pressure than traditional hydraulic presses while still remaining simple to use. In addition, its tonnage gauge, ability to move ram cylinder left to right as well as 9 height adjustments make this an excellent machine to use on small projects as well as large ones!
Although hydraulic presses are strong and reliable, they can be expensive to own and require regular maintenance. Some shops opt for hybrid presses using both hydraulic and pneumatic technologies known as hydro pneumatic presses to save money and decrease maintenance requirements. This type of press combines hydraulic oil and compressed air for tasks like forming, punching, riveting and bending; in addition to being less costly and energy efficient than their hydraulic counterparts.
Fabricators often find the movable table hydraulic press convenient, as it enables them to load materials from forklift or overhead crane without having to manipulate the entire press frame and table to accommodate larger pieces. It is especially beneficial in straightening and forming sizable sheets of metal as its movements allow access to difficult-to-reach places.
The Pump
The pump is at the core of every press, converting mechanical energy from its motor into fluid flow energy that powers the hydraulic jack. The pump consists of a suction pipe and delivery valve; at its lower end there is also an optional foot valve installed that only opens upwards for added protection against unknown materials entering its inlet; and finally its upper end connects to high pressure water outlet where its opening only occurs upwards.
Pumps are closed spaces composed of two gears, the pump body, front and rear covers, that convey and pressurize liquid by changing its volume through their sealed pump cavity. They can be divided into various types depending on their use.
Air over hydraulic presses use compressed air instead of hydraulic oil for their work, providing all the strength of traditional hydraulic systems while using up to 50% less energy and space. They are small, light, simple in structure and user friendly - offering all their strength while saving space and energy costs by being compact, light weight and simple.
Air over hydraulic systems typically utilize three kinds of pumps: piston, gear and centrifugal. Each has their own set of advantages and drawbacks, yet all perform the same function - turning mechanical energy into hydraulic pressure.
Piston pumps are the most widely-used type of pump, characterized by their compact structure and wide use in industrial production due to their excellent performance, reasonable price and widespread applications. Their main advantage lies in their small size and low power consumption.
Alternatives to piston pumps include rotary positive displacement pumps. Their working principle relies on altering the volume of the pump cavity between meshing gears in order to move and pressurize liquids, making this type of pump suitable for transporting toxic, corrosive or explosive liquids with reduced maintenance costs and thermal barriers that separate fluid from drive seals, thus eliminating leakage or corrosion issues.
