How to Make a Hydraulic Cider Press

Hydraulic apple presses are an ideal way for established cidermakers who wish to increase efficiency and juice yield, as they require much less manual labor and are simpler to clean than rack and cloth styles.
The frame must be strong enough to withstand the force of the hydraulic jack, and should be easily sanitized to prevent bacteria contamination of your cider. Furthermore, no more than 1/16" should exist between each of its slats in order to keep peel and core debris from sneaking in and spoiling it!
Frame
If you want to create cider from the comfort of your own home, a hydraulic press can be an excellent tool. This equipment helps reduce manual labor required when pressing apples and can quickly produce large volumes. These presses can be found both online and at local home improvement stores; most come complete with metal frames, buckets and wooden blocks necessary for supporting jack support; some even feature 3 ton hydraulic jacks!
Construction of an apple press begins by creating its frame. Dimensions for this should take into account the height and maximum depth of car jack you wish to use as well as any wiggle room for adjustments. A short frame would make inserting too deeply into bucket - thus hindering its effective pressing capabilities.
Next, create the basket. It should consist of evenly spaced slats that cover at least 1/16 of an inch gap between them so as to prevent peel and core pieces escaping through gaps into your cider. Furthermore, each slat should also be equally distributed so as to distribute pressure evenly throughout its structure from your jack.
Bolts with neatly drilled holes should be used instead of nails or screws when joining frame joints for your homemade cider press as they will ensure its integrity under extreme force. This will protect its safety for use and help ensure a good user experience.
Basket
A hydraulic cider press relies on its basket as the foundation. This must withstand pressure from its hydraulic bottle jack while being large enough to contain plenty of apple mash, and make use of dense wood such as maple for optimal results. Red oak was chosen instead due to being highly porous but might have leaked under pressure, decreasing effectiveness.
To create your own basket, first cut 14 long slats from plywood, plastic food grade cutting board or another material to a uniform size. These should then be glued and screwed at right angles to one another onto a frame at right angles to each other; be sure to select thick and well-made boards; it is also wise to glue together before screwing, to avoid gaps where dirt could enter and accumulate.
Once your basket is completed, attaching it to the squeezer board will require threading one end of a screw through its threads in the squeezer board, and adding a handle at its free end. Any coarsely threaded rod that measures 22" long should work just fine for this task.
After selecting your ingredients, you'll require a collection bucket equipped with a spigot and longer leaver to help reduce strain on the hydraulic press. Furthermore, mesh bags should be purchased to hold chunks of fruit before pressing to prevent apples from sticking together and maximize juice extraction. Eventually, investing in a hydraulic press may prove worthwhile since it can handle multiple gallons simultaneously.
Squeezer Board
Hydraulic presses can be far more efficient at extracting juice from fruit than their traditional counterparts, quickly processing multiple gallons at the same time and helping produce higher-quality juice. Furthermore, manual labor can be reduced significantly for larger-scale home production operations.
To create the squeezer board, visit junkyards, flea markets or secondhand stores and look for an old piano stool with a screw that fastens its seat to its frame - this serves as an analogy for what should be an approximately 22" coarsely threaded rod used as the press' squeezer board. Once you find one of these screws, affix it to the front 4x4 framing member using the same sort of nut used on piano seats to secure them securely - then hammer its end into its location at the front 4x4.
Once the squeezer board is set up, the next step in creating the basket is cutting a circle from plywood or plastic food-grade cutting board with the diameter of your bucket (some buckets slop inward at their inner height), attaching this circular piece using duct tape, then covering it with an uncontaminated sack large enough for holding your basket.
Once your basket is in place, add a layer of pomace to it and cover it with cheese cloth before stacking another layer of squeezing materials on top. Continue this process until the structure gives out a satisfying groan as juice begins dripping out; repeat this process until all of its juice has been extracted from its bundle.
Hydraulic Pump
Hydraulic pumps are essential components of a cider press, helping generate the high amounts of pressure necessary for pressing. Their design also plays a part in producing juice with greater clarity than otherwise would be the case.
Hydraulic pumps can be found in a range of machines and industries, from construction and excavation to automotive manufacturing, agriculture, mining and defense contracting. Their primary role is converting mechanical energy to hydraulic energy for use by machinery such as excavators, presses and lifts.
An ideal hydraulic pump must be constructed of durable materials that can withstand the pressures associated with operating fluids such as petroleum oil and synthetic hydrocarbons, without sparking. Furthermore, since such pumps will likely be utilized in environments which could pose potential explosion risks.
Positive-displacement pumps are the most widely-used type of hydraulic pump. This type of pump displaces (delivers) a fixed amount of liquid each time the pumping element rotates; its size determines its degree of displacement.
For optimal operation of a hydraulic pump, it should be regularly inspected and maintained. Any time its temperature surpasses its operational limit, its pressure rapidly decreases or it stops working altogether, the pump should be shut off immediately. When performing inspection and maintenance on any pump it should also be safely disconnected from its power source, keeping moving parts away from employees to prevent injury.
Hydraulic apple presses are an easy and productive way to produce home-pressed cider at home and speed up productivity by producing more apples in less time. Building one is straightforward with either an electric or manual hydraulic pump; parts for either are readily available online and in stores. When ready to use your hydraulic press, be sure to wear proper personal protective equipment and follow proper lockout procedures prior to starting up the machine.
Hydraulic Hose
Hydraulic hoses must be made of resistant materials in order to withstand the force exerted by hydraulic presses, while remaining compatible with the liquid they transport. There are various types of hydraulic hoses; each has a distinct inner tube, reinforcement layer and protective outer cover made up of flexible materials like rubber, thermoplastics or PTFE (Teflon). In addition, reinforcement layers might include wire helixes, textile braiding or spiral-wound wire; while outer covers protect from abrasions oil and weather.
Exposed to high temperatures can have an adverse impact on hydraulic hose, hastening its degradation and decreasing flexibility. Therefore, it's crucial that a compatibility chart be consulted in order to select an ideal hose.
As doing so could cause the hose to rupture, its maximum recommended working pressure must not be exceeded. This pressure depends on its size and temperature of liquid being transported; its label should state this information clearly.
Hydraulic cider presses should feature frames which can withstand the force of their hydraulic jack while remaining easy to use and maintain, such as natural wood or food-grade metal such as stainless steel. Any frame that comes into direct contact with juice should be thoroughly sanitized using a dilute iodine solution before being put back into service.
Homemade cider presses can save money, with only the downside being they take longer to construct than professional-grade hydraulic presses. Still, homemade presses can be invaluable tools for small-scale cideries who plan to expand operations.
