How to Make a Ring Using a Hydraulic Press

Hydraulic presses are machines that utilize the physical properties of fluids to exert mechanical forces for engineering, industrial and scientific applications. Pascal's Law states that any force applied to confined fluid is distributed evenly throughout it; hence a hydraulic press operates according to this principle.
Hydraulic presses can transform metal into various shapes, designs and densities with the press of its hydraulic pistons. In this five-day class, you will learn best practices for using and maintaining a hydraulic press as well as using Bonny Doon silhouette and embossing dies.
Preparation
A hydraulic press is an invaluable asset in the metalsmith's toolbox. Unlike many tools, its unique pressure-infusing capabilities make it perfect for shaping metal and other strong materials while remaining easy and accurate for operation - ideal for transforming or shaping them to produce desirable shapes. When used for forming, bending, or moulding purposes a hydraulic press can increase productivity in any workshop while saving both time and effort.
Hydraulic presses consist of cylinders filled with hydraulic oil that's powered by pumps, which then exert force against an object using valves that regulate how much force is being applied. A mini hydraulic press may be more suitable for laboratory users who require something smaller in terms of capacity but easier to manage and more portable than large capacity machines.
Specac offers an expansive selection of hydraulic presses designed to meet various applications. Our selection includes both industrial-grade hydraulic presses as well as smaller laboratory models with manual and automated controls which still apply an impressive amount of force.
Like any machinery, hydraulic presses aren't infallible and can experience various issues that compromise their performance. But these issues can often be prevented with regular maintenance inspections - failing to do this could result in expensive repairs and potentially serious injuries.
One of the more prevalent issues encountered with hydraulic presses is leakage, often as a result of equipment damage, loose or defective hydraulic lines or using inappropriate fluid type. Over time, these issues can lead to the reduction of fluid pressure and degradation of mechanical seals, leading to leakage that compromises overall hydraulic press efficiency and allows contaminants to reach workpiece. These contaminants can contribute to corrosion, shortening equipment's lifespan and endangering workers. By following simple maintenance tips, it's possible to prevent such issues and ensure your hydraulic press functions optimally.
Die Cut
Hydraulic die forming may not often make headlines in goldsmithing texts and articles because it appears so industrial and difficult. Yet this technique - which involves pressing metal into various forms with hydraulic pressure - can actually be quite useful for crafting one-off jewelry pieces, like rings, pendants, bracelets and beads. Hydraulic die forming serves a useful function by filling a gap between industrial blanking processes and hand sawing; producing shapes which would otherwise be very hard to cut by hand sawing techniques; using simple shearing die punch out identical parts faster; faster than cutting them by sawing or industrial blanking processes alone!
Start by starting with a piece of annealed 26-gauge copper that is at least 3/8 of an inch larger in all dimensions than the desired shape you wish to create, in order for it to be drawn down into your female die. Annealing will improve strength of the final material. Cut a piece of plexiglass or masonite to size that fits over Part A's die cutout; use double-stick tape here but also consider using some duct tape if possible so the parts stay secure during press operation.
Cut the plate smaller than the scribed line on Part A to create the upper portion of your die, clean and flux it before sweat soldering it to Part A making sure all joints are heated evenly with no air pockets forming; this will create an extremely strong joint that won't crack or tear under pressure and become Part C; its lower part of your die.
Center Part A over the plate and draw a line around it with a pen or marker. Saw or drill away at the plate to the line you scribed, taking care to maintain straight perpendicular sides. Now is the time to file it down carefully in accordance with that line - this forms the edge of your die.
Pressing
Hydraulic presses are widely utilized across a range of industries to produce and shape machine components. Hydraulic presses create mechanical force by compressing an incompressible liquid, producing enormous amounts of force that is harnessed during production processes such as forging, clinching, molding, blanking, punching deep drawing and metal forming.
A hydraulic press uses Pascal's law, which states that any pressure exerted on fluid is spread evenly in all directions. It consists of two cylinders - with one larger than the other housing the Ram and connected to a pipe carrying pressured liquid - connected by pistons with pistons in between connected by pipes to carry this pressurised liquid; when pressure is applied to either piston it results in increased liquid pressure when any small force is applied to either of them resulting in higher levels.
Pressure from this machine is transferred through hydraulic press pistons onto its ram, which then pushes against the material being pressed. Since its force output allows it to crush even hard materials easily - making this tool the perfect fit for producing swords that require high density of metals under immense amounts of pressure.
These machines can be dangerous if used incorrectly, so it's vital that you understand how to operate the hydraulic press before using it in any application. First off, ensure that the material to be pressed does not weigh too much - doing so could damage both the machine and cause injury; furthermore a hydraulic press won't work on anything with sharp edges or rough textures.
Once you've selected the appropriate material for your project, place it between two end plates of the hydraulic press and check that none of its edges contain tears or breaks. Next, the hydraulic press will compress the material until it forms a ring shape - this process should only take minutes!
Finishing
Finishing is the act of completing a task or project by making all necessary modifications, adjustments or polishing to bring it to completion. Finishing can be applied across various disciplines such as art, writing, construction or manufacturing.
Discover the exciting design and form possibilities of the hydraulic press during this five-day workshop by creating custom rings, vessels and boxes using embossing dies, silhouette forming dies and 3" deep draw tools from Bonny Doon. Emphasize safety while exploring this incredible tool's limitless creative and financial benefits.
Expand the capabilities of your six ton A frame hydraulic press by eliminating the need for separate presses when making coin rings. This 1.75'' diameter ram head reduces clearance by approximately 1/2'' when in place and will fit any Harbor Freight brand press with 0.70" (or 18 mm) diameter ram shaft dia. with no difficulty.
