Hydraulic presses are essential tools in any machine shop. Not only do they make metal forming simpler and more efficient, but they can also lead to accidents.

Hydraulic presses require regular upkeep and care to stay running safely and efficiently. In this article, we'll address some of the most common problems hydraulic presses may encounter and offer solutions to prevent them.

1. Check the Pressure

Hydraulic press machines are renowned for their capacity to crush a variety of objects. You'll see them crushing everything from sticky notes and candles, to metal kitchen utensils and more.

However, this power can take its toll on the machine. Over time, hydraulic press machines may deteriorate and become less reliable.

Maintain the pressure in your press by checking its pressure. If it appears low, you may require either a pressure relief valve or replacement pump plunger.

Also, never attempt to press material that is too large or heavy for the machine; doing so could damage it or lead to injury to the operator.

2. Check the Temperature

Hydraulic presses can be used for a variety of tasks, but are primarily employed for compressing objects to their limits. For instance, food producers can utilize presses to efficiently package meat, cheese and other items while extending shelf life.

Maintaining the ideal operating temperature of oil within a press is essential to maximize performance and extend press life. A small heat exchanger or air cooler can help achieve this temperature with minimal risk of seals or lubricant degradation. This will increase press life while increasing seal longevity.

3. Check the Fluid

Hydraulic presses rely heavily on fluid for proper operation; without it, your press would not run correctly and its lifespan would be drastically shortened.

Checking the fluid in a vehicle is an easy, time-saving step that can save you both time and money in the long run. To do this, use either a handheld infrared thermometer or thermal camera.

High fluid temperature can be caused by any factor that reduces a system's capacity to dissipate heat or increases its heat load. Examples include an excessive workload, high duty cycle or failed or worn component with internal leakage.

Oil leaks are a frequent issue that many h-frame presses face. The oil may come from the piston oil seal, an contaminated check ball or damaged piston packing.

4. Check the Pressure-Control Valve

Pressure control valves regulate the flow of hydraulic fluid. They're commonly found on hydraulic pumps and motors.

Hydraulic pistons contain cams. These can be controlled through various means, such as opening or closing a port.

If the pressure-control valve in your hydraulic system is stuck, it could indicate an underlying issue such as a blocked balance hole, broken spring or loose fit.

If the pressure-control valve on your hydraulic system does not open and close correctly, it could be time for replacement. This poses a major safety hazard to both you and the employees in case of power outage; without an operational valve, your hydraulic system and employees could suffer severe harm.

5. Check the Ram

The hydraulic press is an invaluable asset to manufacturers seeking accuracy and control in large-scale operations. However, it's essential that you maintain your machine properly so as to prevent future issues.

A hydraulic press consists of two interconnected cylinders filled with fluid. One cylinder is larger than the other and known as "The Ram".

Pascal's Law states that the pressure in a Ram will remain unchanged regardless of its position. This causes the fluid to compress and crush whatever is placed between the cylinders.

Hydraulic presses are employed for a number of tasks, such as metal forming and punching, installation and removal of parts. If not operated properly, the consequences could be disastrous; thus it's essential that all parts be checked daily for damage.
