Since 2015, Finnish workshop owner Lauri Vuohensilta has been making waves online with videos showing him crushing objects with his hydraulic press - such as beer cans or bowling balls - using it. These have quickly become viral Internet memes.
As demonstrated by the subreddit r/hydraulicpressgifs, hydraulic presses can be powerful machines capable of crushing anything that comes their way. But what exactly can these crushers pulverize?
What cant a hydraulic press crush?
Hydraulic presses are heavy pieces of machinery which use hydraulic cylinders to compress, flatten or mold materials. Common in industrial machine shops and with many specific and general uses; one such use involves creating fat-free cocoa powder by extracting its fat from processed cocoa beans.
Presses are essential tools in many industrial settings, yet their misuse can be hazardous if neglected or misused improperly. They're one of the leading causes of workplace injuries due to high pressures, fast speeds, and potentially hazardous components - there are multiple potential failure points which could result in harm being caused to users or third-parties.
These include improper maintenance, inadequate safety precautions and failure to care for the machine properly. A hydraulic press is a complex piece of machinery which needs daily inspection and regular maintenance in order to avoid damage or failure and help protect workers against accidental injuries while decreasing repair costs. By taking these measures regularly and routinely, this step helps safeguard workers while mitigating risks for costly repairs in the future.
Hydraulic presses can provide hours of entertainment. YouTube videos posted from the Hydraulic Press Channel(opens in new tab) show them crushing an array of items such as golf balls, books, rubber ducks, bearing balls, bowling pins and pins, Lego toys, Nokia 3310 phones, as well as multiple hydraulic presses themselves!
Lauri Vuohensilta of Finnish workshop fame launched the channel, quickly gaining fame when his video of him trying to fold paper seven times with his hydraulic press went viral on Reddit in March 2016. Videos feature black-and-white shots of Vuohensilta using his work, alongside him speaking about what he does.
Vuohensilta's trademark cheerful Finnish accent and lighthearted approach to his work draw viewers in; as a result, his channel has amassed millions of subscribers worldwide.
Diamonds
Diamonds may be one of the hardest materials on Earth, but that doesn't make them impervious to crushing. Diamonds are in fact relatively brittle and can easily be broken apart with any hard object bringing sufficient force; hammers being ideal, although even hydraulic presses can easily crush diamonds.
Hydraulic Press Channel on YouTube has long been making headlines with their powerful hydraulic press video demonstrations, but their latest video may top them all. They've already crushed objects like golf balls and bowling pins as well as cans of beer and Lego toys; now, for something truly spectacular they've added a real diamond into the press!
In this video, a 1.2-carat lab-grown diamond is placed into a hydraulic press and quickly begins to shatter under the immense pressure. It's truly amazing to witness, with over one million views on YouTube already.
Many viewers may be surprised to learn that diamonds, considered one of the hardest materials available, can be broken so easily. It is important to keep in mind that diamonds only qualify as hard due to their resistance to scratching; in actuality they are relatively non-brittle and easily crushed with any amount of force applied directly.
If you want to test the strength of your own diamond, there are plenty of online resources that can assist. Just ensure you use only small pieces and do not attempt to bend or twist it - as doing so could cause it to break apart. There are other materials harder than diamonds such as tungsten and steel; these have higher tensile strengths so they can withstand greater forces before breaking. If hydraulic presses still don't seem capable, liquid nitrogen might help freeze it solid.
Motorcycle Batteries
Motorcycle batteries come in various forms, with lead acid flooded batteries being the most prevalent choice. Unfortunately, these are susceptible to leakage and need regular topping up as well as being less resistant to vibration and impacts than sealed and gel batteries; sealed and gel batteries tend to be expensive and not very good at handling cold weather well either. More recently lithium-ion batteries are beginning to make an impression in powersport battery markets, offering lighter alternatives which offer greater resilience against vibration and impacts than their lead acid counterparts.
As a starting point, Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) rating should be your go-to metric when choosing a battery. CCA measures how many amps a battery can deliver for 30 seconds at freezing temperature - generally considered as the best way to assess starting capabilities on any bike.
Amp Hour Rating (AHR), provides an indication of how long your battery can remain charged on average, typically. A higher rating often signifies better quality batteries.
Multimeters, also known as digital volt and ohm meters, make testing battery voltage easier than ever. You can purchase these meters at most autoparts stores at a reasonable cost. Plug the black lead into the port marked "COM" (common ground) while plugging red into "V," powering on and touching both leads onto negative post of battery where necessary will display its voltage reading on screen.
Note two essential points when performing this test: first, if the battery is dead it won't charge no matter what you do to it; and secondly, remembering that overcharging or too-rapid charging could damage it; this is why it's crucial to use only high quality battery chargers and follow their instructions to the letter.
Finally, battery crush testing machines should be properly maintained and kept clean and dry at all times. Faults should be addressed promptly or reported directly to the equipment center; large pieces should be serviced two to five times each month.
Beer
No object is safe from the crushing power of a hydraulic press; viewers of videos from Hydraulic Press Channel (opens in new tab) have become obsessed with watching them flatten everything they see - from cans of beer and fruit, to Nokia 3310s! Since 2011, this channel has been uploading videos that demonstrate this phenomenon; viewers have become addicted to watching videos of how things collapse under its crushing pressure - leading some people even to create subreddits dedicated solely to flattening random objects in hydraulic presses (r/hydraulicpressgifs).
Lauri Vuohensilta, a Finnish factory owner and the star of Reddit-driven Hydraulic Press Channel. Now boasting more than 1.7 million subscribers and videos featuring Vuohensilta using his hydraulic press to flatten everything from bowling balls to camera lenses, Vuohensilta has become an online celebrity in his own right.
One of the recent episodes saw an unstoppable force like the hydraulic press meet its match in the form of a powerful neodymium magnet, but only just. Crush it it did, though barely. For extra meta fun, they posted video showing one blue hydraulic press inside another red one for some extra meta fun, recalling Inception-esque dreams-within-dreams sequences from movies like Inception.
Australian fans of Vegemite may want to look away now, as Vuohensilta's video is sure to make you weep. He used a hydraulic press and lowered its ram to smash a jar full of Vegemite before placing Speedos over it as protection from its hot mess molten mess, yet still managed to destroy this classic Aussie spread! Although heartbreaking to watch unfold live, it also provided great entertainment - watch below.
