Deep draw forming is a technique that utilizes hydraulic power to apply controlled force on a metal blank, creating intricate shapes. This process has many applications in both industrial and consumer products such as weight scale instruments.
The forming process is determined by several factors, such as material type, part specifications and production volume. These can have an immense effect on press configuration and tooling requirements for manufacturing operations.
What is deep draw forming?
Deep drawing is a metal forming process that produces seamless sheet metal parts with greater depths than their radiuses. These parts can be used for creating products like cans, pots, compressed gas cylinders, engine cylinders, eyelets, sinks and automotive body panels.
This process works best with ductile materials such as aluminum alloys, brass and copper alloys, cold rolled low carbon sheet steel, and titanium. However, the material must also possess sufficient work hardening and anisotropy properties in order to obtain satisfactory forming results.
Contrary to stamping, deep drawing allows material to flow into the die cavity instead of being sheared off. This redistribution prevents metal accumulation on the die walls and promotes metal grain flow - increasing strength and mechanical properties of the finished part.
It is essential that punch and die clearances in the forming process be sufficient for material to flow into the die cavity. Without this, metal may tear or pierce through the die cavity, leading to a defect in the final product.
To prevent wrinkles in the flange region, blank holders are typically employed to transfer force required for holding material securely while it enters a die cavity. This can be done from above via a blank holder slide or from below using a draw cushion.
Why hydraulic presses are used for deep drawing ?
Deep drawing is a fabrication process that allows sheet metal parts to be formed into desired shapes. Sheet metal parts can be produced from steel, aluminum, stainless steel or titanium alloys in many shapes such as round, rectangular and square configurations.
Deep drawn parts are commonly utilized for automotive body and structural components, aircraft parts and utensils. They're also frequently found in household goods as well as medical technology.
Hydraulic presses are often employed for deep drawing operations. They can be operated manually or with the aid of a computerized human machine interface (HMI).
Deep drawing manufacture involves the flow of metal from the peripheral into a smaller circular cavity within a die cavity. Unlike bending or pressing where metals are forced into shallow dies, deep drawing produces significant plastic flow results.
When the sheet of metal is placed into a die cavity, it is shaped by compressive, tensile and shear forces. This can result in earing - defined as wavy edges at the open end of the drawn cup.
To prevent this, a press must ensure the flow of metal into the die cavity is unobstructed and even. This can be accomplished by controlling blank holding force from above via a blank holder slide or from below via draw cushion.
What are the advantages of deep drawing?
Deep drawing is an efficient method for fabricating large sheet metal components. It can be applied to various materials and produce complex shapes.
This process is often combined with blanking and piercing to produce a finished product. Since it produces an integral, closed-ended part, there's no need to cut or weld multiple pieces together for your desired shape.
Deep drawing requires materials that are sufficiently ductile, so they can be deformed without producing additional strain. Common choices for this application include aluminum alloy, copper alloy and stainless steel.
Deep drawing offers several advantages over other forming processes, including using less material and thus cutting waste production costs.
Another advantage is its efficiency, enabling greater production capacity. Furthermore, this method produces higher-quality parts than other methods do.
Press frame styles come with double or triple action rams for double or triple tonnage control on each cylinder. This configuration helps prevent material from escaping through knockout cylinders or bed cushions, thus reducing wrinkles and tears.
