YouTube channels that feature crushing everyday objects with hydraulic presses have become one of the hottest viral video trends, drawing millions to watch Finnish factory owner Lauri Vuohensilta crush clocks, fruit, Nokia 3310s and other items in his family workshop - the resultant destruction somehow satisfying.
Since launching in October 2015, Hydraulic Press Channel (HPC) has quickly become a phenomenon. After posting its introductory video to social news website Reddit and receiving over two million views within just 24 hours of being posted there, media attention from around the globe was drawn in. Today HPC remains one of the top-ranked channels on Reddit with millions of subscribers worldwide.
Hydraulic Press Channel videos are straightforward and uncomplicated, typically beginning with a black-and-white shot of a hydraulic press with Thor's Hammer playing in the background, followed by a voice speaking with a thick Finnish accent offering laconic running commentary about how awesomely destruction occurs; sometimes his wife even joins him!
Vuohensilta's videos highlight his industrial strength hydraulic press's capacity to crush various items. His multiple pumps can exert up to 144 tonnes of force to flatten, shatter or otherwise destroy objects like golf balls, books, bearing balls, Lego toys, hockey pucks, bears, rubber duckies and mobile phones - among others.
While the main attraction of Vuohensilta and his wife's videos lies in watching objects get crushed, their interaction and commentary add an extra dimension. Their playful banter and humorous dialogue has become a favorite with online audiences.
As well as their main YouTube channel for Hydraulic Press videos, this couple also runs Beyond the Press with other types of videos such as their use of other machines in their shop, family outings and real work completed as part of their machining business.
"Playing for the Men" is a new video released by Anni and her partner that highlights her new silicone breasts that she proudly displays at the beginning. After discovering that most of their viewers are male, they decided to use YouTube revenue to buy Anni new breasts; using hydraulic press and air cannon they were then used to shatter them down for destruction.
Why did Hydraulic Press Channel become so popular?
Five years ago, Finnish workshop owner Lauri Vuohensilta launched his YouTube channel using a 150-ton hydraulic press to crush things with. Since then, his channel has amassed 10 million followers across social media platforms, becoming a cultural touchstone and popular topic of Internet videos. I recently asked why his brand of destruction had proven so successful on a video call call with me.
He credits his channel's popularity to its seduction, unexpected results and sense of humor. It is humorous to watch durable objects being broken apart by hydraulic presses suddenly; "it almost sexual; like watching an orgasm!" he commented.
This channel specializes in crushing various objects using a hydraulic press that can exert up to 144 tonnes (142 long tons; 159 short tons) of force. Popular videos feature objects like golf balls, books, rubber ducks, bearing balls, Nokia 3310 cell phones and clay figures hand made by Vuohensilta's wife as well as more experimental approaches like dropping remote controls into liquid nitrogen or vacuum cleaners to crush an object.
Vuohensilta begins each video by explaining the object he plans on pressing with his hydraulic press, showing off his green machine which nods toward Will It Blend? and Red Hot Nickel Ball channels, and explaining why and how it works - providing clear explanations that anyone can comprehend easily.
Vuohensilta's channel is especially entertaining due to the tension between metallic-sheen machines and Vuohensilta's goofy, yet goofy nerdiness. Additionally, both his wife and himself possess charming accents which add further comedic effect in many videos on his channel.
Vuohensilta noted in one of his Q&A videos on YouTube that he has long been interested in watch-things-break channels like Will It Blend and Red Hot Nickel Ball. He further revealed that his and his wife's motivation behind starting the channel stemmed from their enjoyment in trying to crush objects with large machining equipment at work, specifically crushing death rays and dinosaurs. Now working on a hydraulic press project designed specifically to accomplish that task. View a preview below - if it proves successful, this could give the Hydraulic Press Channel an extra boost! For now though, they remain on track towards earning that all-important YouTube Play Button, with only an additional million subscribers needed before being granted full gold status - an achievable goal nonetheless!
How did Hydraulic Press Channel become so popular?
The Hydraulic Press Channel on YouTube features Lauri Vuohensilta crushing items using his family's hydraulic press, to the delight of millions of views and has helped the pair expand their business. They have since started "Beyond the Press," another YouTube channel dedicated to showing what happens when they're not using their hydraulic press; including destruction work around their shop as well as performing real work for customers.
The hydraulic press featured in these videos can generate up to 144 tons of pressure, more than enough to crush most objects such as cars and buildings. Furthermore, this channel has shown various items being crushed such as metal tools, toys, bowling balls and even Venezuelan bolivares!
As well as being entertaining to watch, the videos also have educational value. They can teach people how to correctly use and operate a hydraulic press safely - becoming an educational resource both young children and adults can turn to for guidance.
Recently, in a Q&A video uploaded by their channel, a couple discussed how they rose to such fame on YouTube. They stated that their success can be traced to being inspired by other "watch things break" channels such as Will it Blend and Red Hot Nickel Ball. Furthermore, they thanked fate for providing unique content which allowed them to find an online niche community of fans.
Another reason these videos have become such hits is due to their high production quality. Each one is professionally edited with a great soundtrack, using hydraulic press in ways that make destruction look real and exciting. YouTube also boosts these videos via their algorithm by returning similar content when people watch other videos on its platform.
Its success has also allowed this channel to promote other YouTube channels and products, drawing over 10,000 subscribers while also being able to generate considerable advertising revenue through ads placed on videos. Furthermore, Toolboxes For Cars and JC Whitney have both secured sponsorship for this channel.
Although its success may come as a shock to many, its continued growth seems inevitable. The videos are entertaining, educational, and appeal to a broad range of viewers, making the channel's success an inspiration to other influencers and marketers who hope to create successful videos on YouTube. Following in their footsteps can lead to greater viewership for other creators' videos which ultimately increases the odds that these will become viral hits!
