Few things signal autumn like freshly-pressed apple cider. Mike Craghead shows us how to build a hydraulic fruit press using items found around your garden or shed.
This hydraulic press allows you to reduce labour costs while increasing yield. It comes complete with frame with base board, juice collection drain pan, stainless steel basket and hydraulic jack.
Frame
Hydraulic fruit presses start with their foundation: the frame. This may be constructed of wood or more robust steel structures; either way, its job is to support the force generated from a car jack without succumbing to pressure and breaking under pressure - something any fruit press cannot tolerate! To do this successfully requires having strong frame that won't break under the strain. Likewise, its board at the bottom must also be strong to absorb some of that force before spreading out into spreading out some force across it's entirety and dispersal of force onto its board at bottom so as not to compromise this essential press functionality!
Hydraulic presses come equipped with various driving mechanisms. Some use piston and cylinder configuration, while others utilize eccentric and crankshaft configuration. These differences in driving mechanisms affect how much force is applied and utilized.
Hydraulic presses are widely utilized in food processing and pharmaceutical production to remove moisture from raw materials, typically fruit juice extraction, vegetable dehydration and medicinal juice production. Their easy operation, sturdy build and large pressing forces all combine for higher production efficiencies and production rates.
This manual hydraulic fruit press is ideal for pressing apples, pears and other fruits into juice without electricity or handwork. With its small ventilation slots and high yield of juice production - up to 10 litres per 15kg of apples! - this machine helps save efforts while optimizing output - helping maximise results while saving effort.
Manual hydraulic fruit presses consist of a metal frame, juice collection drain pan, basket, piston ring and wooden blocks for the jack; as well as a filter bag and user guide. Powder coating adds strength and durability; its special prop centers the jack while piston rings can easily be removed for use again or storage purposes. Plastic legs on its base make carrying easier while protecting its cover.
Box-type hydraulic presses boast superior rigidity compared to other frame designs, with no deflection and long and precise job operations. Their H-frame design extends tool life while decreasing maintenance costs; making these presses perfect for heavy-duty jobs. While more expensive than C-frame power presses, their higher quality construction and superior durability more than justify the additional expense.
Basket
A hydraulic press' basket is one of the most integral elements in its system, designed to hold crushed fruit while also allowing juice from being squeezed out as you squeeze down on its piston. To maximize effectiveness, its construction should use durable wood for construction; depth must also be sufficient so as not to leak while being squeezed.
A good basket should be constructed from wood with a dense grain, to allow maximum pressure to be applied without bending and warping. Maple or oak are preferred materials; at least two inches wide baskets should be used and their slats arranged so as to apply an even distribution of pressure across its entirety; this allows you to extract as much juice as possible from them.
Before beginning construction of your basket, a few tools will be essential. A saw and drill are needed for cutting the pieces of wood needed and installing screws into place, respectively. In addition, you will require a metal plate as the foundation of your basket; this metal plate allows you to place a hydraulic jack without worrying that its pressing process may cause its structure to flex during pressing process.
Hydraulic pumps are also essential when creating your hydraulic fruit press. With many types of pumps to choose from, each offering its own set of features and specifications. You can use the pump to control force being applied to your piston, providing greater or reduced power depending on what results you want to see.
Building a hydraulic fruit press can be done in various ways and it's up to you to find what best works for you. Key considerations when designing this device include selecting a frame dimension and basket size to attach with a hydraulic jack - once this basic framework is set up it should only take time before you're sipping fresh squeezed juice!
Jack
Hydraulic presses use water pressure to squeeze pomace against an outer cylinder ring and produce juice in an efficient and timely fashion. They're widely used by wineries for grapes, but also work great on apples and other fruits such as pears. They produce large volumes of juice more rapidly than traditional basket presses; some larger cideries even own their own hydraulic presses to speed production even further.
Hydraulic presses come from niche manufacturers and are expensive, yet essential as cideries grow larger. Home-brewers looking to build their own cider press should consider purchasing one of these devices; their designs vary greatly but generally consist of four vertical boards connected by hinges to one horizontal board in the center; all connections should be secure before activating the hydraulic jack if applicable.
Building your own hydraulic fruit press starts with creating the base. Wood should be cut to fit roughly around the dimensions of your bucket before being attached with screws and drill. Rot resistant wood will help protect any damage to either jacks or buckets during assembly.
After building the base, a bucket should be added. To prevent any bacterial contamination from bacteria growth, be sure to use one that has been cleaned and disinfected prior to filling with pomace; once full place on top of wooden block. Pump jack up until reaching top of frame
Once the jack has been pumped, it should be left to settle before releasing the cloth bundle and starting the juice flow from bucket to collection bucket or pan. Repeat these steps until all the juice has been extracted from bucket.
Filtration Bag
Filter bags are special cloth filters designed to reduce the amount of sediment found in final juice products when used with hydraulic fruit presses. Simply place it over your slatted frame, press, and the water pressure expands through its fabric filter and pushes out any leftover apple bits that might leave behind residual sediment, helping ensure high quality final products.
Making homemade apple cider can be an enjoyable family activity, and with so many presses on the market it can be daunting to know which will best meet your needs. But fear not! This guide has all of the information needed for selecting an ideal home cider press!
One of the key components of using a home apple cider press is grinding up your apples prior to pressing. Pressing whole would produce too little juice due to insufficient release of moisture from their cells; for this reason it's recommended to invest in an apple grinder which will convert your fruit into fine pulp that will easily release its juice when compressed.
If you don't have access to an electric grinder, another way is possible for preparing apples for juicing is crushing them by hand. While this task may take more time and effort than using an electric grinder, the results will still be outstanding. Be sure that both hands are cleaned prior to and after handling apples; any dirt or bacteria can taint your finished product and compromise its flavor.
Or you could opt for an electric fruit crusher ESE-018, which will do all the hard work for you. This machine can quickly squeeze up to 50 liters of juice per hour from apples, pears, grapes, and other berries; plus it is simple enough for one person to operate!
