Diamonds may be famously hard, but that doesn't make them indestructible. A simple mistimed blow could crack or shatter them with just a little force applied at just the wrong moment.
Hydraulic Press Channel's brilliant lunatics have been having fun crushing all sorts of stuff with their hydraulic press, including now an actual diamond!
What is a Hydraulic Press?
Hydraulic presses are types of machines that utilize hydraulic fluid to generate mechanical force and compress materials or change their shape. Hydraulic presses are widely used within manufacturing industries for various tasks like forming metal, thinning glass and crushing cars.
A typical hydraulic press consists of two connected cylinders; the larger is known as the ram and its smaller counterpart is known as the plunger. When activated by hydraulic oil flowing from a pump to power its movement, both units connect via piston rods that expand when activated; when this action takes place against workpieces, applying pressure against them. Pressure can be adjusted via settings like gap size between materials pressed together and piston stroke length length to control how much force is being applied against them.
Hydraulic systems rely on Pascal's principle in order to generate mechanical force, with this law stating that even modest amounts of force applied anywhere inside an enclosed container will be transmitted evenly throughout and magnified according to its volume - in other words, this means the hydraulic press's ram can generate enough force to crush diamonds when subjected to enough pressure.
Diamond crushing resembles coal's process for creating energy; pressure exerted by a hydraulic press ram is so great that it breaks apart the gem into small pieces, going viral on YouTube with over 11 million views! This demonstration has gone global!
Hydraulic presses have multiple uses, but their primary function is usually blanking metal into sheets or other shapes - an integral part of forging. They can also be used to press various other materials including plastics and wood.
How does a Hydraulic Press work?
Hydraulic presses, also known as Pascal's Principle machines, utilize this principle to generate pressure within their sealed chamber and create intense levels of pressure that enable it to crush, form and shape metal into complex forms. From hand operated hydraulic presses up to large ones that apply hundreds of tons of force there's a hydraulic press available for every industrial need.
Hydraulic presses have long been used as powerful tools to crush objects, with numerous YouTube channels dedicated to this use case. From bowling balls and soda cans to plastic toys and bowling pins - viewers of such videos have seen millions of them!
Note that even though diamonds are the hardest material on Earth, that does not equate to unbreakability. Hardness and toughness are different things; while diamonds may be very hard, dropping one on hard surface could cause it to chip or shatter.
Hydraulic presses are ideal tools for metal forming because they apply an immense amount of pressure with minimal movement - enabling precise parts. Furthermore, hydraulic presses can be easily customized and tailored to any production process by altering die size, pressure settings, stroke speed settings or process position settings.
Hydraulic presses boast another excellent advantage by producing little noise. This feature is especially important considering excessive noise can contribute to health problems in employees and lower productivity and absenteeism levels for businesses. A hydraulic press eliminates much of the noise produced by other machines, thus increasing productivity while decreasing health issues among workers.
Hydraulic presses are affordable pieces of machinery used to transform different materials. Their many applications in industry and many businesses using such machinery is evident.
Can a Hydraulic Press Make a Diamond?
Diamonds are among the hardest natural materials on Earth, yet that doesn't make them indestructible. A diamond can be broken by being struck hard enough or being exposed to extreme heat or pressure, so knowing how to protect them against damage is crucial - for instance by having a jewelry insurance policy which covers replacement costs in case any chipped or broken pieces occur.
While a hydraulic press can certainly make diamonds, this can only be accomplished using an intricate process. A diamond is formed from carbon atoms exposed to extreme temperatures and pressure; to facilitate this growth process it requires using High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) chemicals which require precise temperature controls in order to produce ideal conditions for creating the precious gemstone. This takes several days of work in order to produce results worthy of its name - for this process to succeed successfully.
Unfortunately, an industrial hydraulic press does not possess the conditions required to create diamonds from coal and graphite; even if it were possible, too many impurities exist for it to work effectively. Hydraulic presses may create high pressures; however they cannot create temperatures and intense pressure required for creating true diamonds.
Still, it is truly captivating to witness a diamond being crushed by a hydraulic press. A YouTube video by Hydraulic Press Channel depicts this incredible scene with an incredible 1.2-carat diamond being crushed under pressure using a powerful hydraulic press in slow motion and featuring macro lens footage that mesmerizes viewers watching it instantly shatter into tiny fragments.
While this video is fantastic, it should be noted that the diamond being crushed in it is not real; rather it is synthetic diamond. Though synthetics don't carry as much value than their natural counterparts, they remain stunning and durable enough for use as engagement rings or as alternatives due to their affordability and durability. Alara recommends all diamond owners secure their investments against chips, cracks or any other forms of damage by purchasing jewelry insurance policies to protect your investment against chips, cracks and other forms of loss.
Why Can’t a Hydraulic Press Make a Diamond?
Diamonds are well-known as one of the hardest natural materials on Earth, making them one of the ideal materials for engagement rings and luxury items such as watches and bracelets. While diamonds may seem indestructible, it is possible to chip or break one with enough force - they even crush under extreme pressure such as hydraulic presses!
Hydraulic Press Channel on YouTube recently unveiled a video in which they demonstrated how their hydraulic press could crush a real diamond donated by a jeweler - using an incredible 1.2 carat gem from one retailer as their target diamond. Once posted online, this video is sure to go viral, given its association with destruction videos such as that seen on their channel.
The Hydraulic Press Channel has used their hydraulic press to crush everything from bowling balls to non-Newtonian fluid, with surprising results. In their newest video, they test the strength of diamond by crushing it using their hydraulic press - to surprising effect; though its initial resistance was impressive enough, eventually breaking under its own weight due to being made up of carbon atoms crystallized and tightly packed together in lattice structures; giving diamond its incredible hardness but making it more fragile at the same time.
A hammer, on the other hand, is typically constructed of soft materials like metals and wood that have lower tensile strength than diamonds and therefore break easily under pressure. While diamonds may withstand immense amounts of pressure without breaking, even one simple hit with a hammer is enough to chip them.
Coal must be compacted under extremely high temperatures and pressures in order to create diamonds, something a regular home hydraulic press cannot accomplish due to being designed only to produce lower pressure levels. Furthermore, to produce diamonds free of impurities like water and hydrocarbons a process called High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) must also be utilized; some companies produce synthetic diamonds using this process but this requires an industrial-sized hydraulic press capable of creating such extreme conditions.
