Many manufacturing processes use hydraulic presses to form or fabricate materials. Jeremy Neil from Macrodyne Technologies; Josh Dixon from Beckwood Press Co.; and Paul Thom from Schuler Inc. explore their use in metal stamping and compression molding applications.
Hydraulic systems utilize oil as the medium for producing and transmitting force, drawing upon Pascal's Law--that pressure in closed systems must remain unchanged during transmission.
Basics
Hydraulic presses utilize hydraulic fluid to transfer force between smaller pistons and larger ones to generate and exert massive amounts of pressure - ideal for metal stamping and car body manufacturing processes alike. But how exactly do these machines work, and what are the risks involved with operating them?
Failure of a hydraulic press's frame and platens poses the greatest threat, potentially spewing dies, pieces, or parts towards you at high velocity. To reduce risk and maximize safety when operating one, ensure work and dies are properly secured before beginning operation.
Energy efficiency is another significant concern of hydraulic systems. Hydraulic systems consume significant electrical energy during loading, unloading and pump operation, which can be mitigated with an energy recovery system that uses an accumulator to store any potential energy created during slider press operation. Energy matching is another successful strategy to increase energy efficiency.
Parts
There are various kinds of hydraulic press machines on the market today. They vary in terms of size, design, capacity and use depending on user needs; their power source differs too: hand pumps, electric pumps or air pumps may all generate different levels of pressure for their respective hydraulic press machines.
Hydraulic presses work according to Pascal's Law, which states that exerted forces applied to liquid will result in greater force due to ratio of areas involved. Joseph Bramah first used this principle with his press which featured two cylinders with pistons connected by pipes filled with liquid.
Hydraulic presses can be used for various applications, from metal stamping and compression molding to wood turning and drilling. Each industry and location has their own set of standards that must be adhered to when building their press machines - these standards may vary based on government agencies such as OSHA.
Instructions
A hydraulic press is a machine that uses liquid as energy transfer medium and force generation mechanism, following Pascal's principle that pressure in enclosed fluid behaves equally in all directions.
Machine has two cylinders containing pistons; one of them is known as a slave cylinder while the other, larger one, is known as the master cylinder. Slave cylinder has an attachment connected with master cylinder which forms a seal when its piston moves; when moved it creates mechanical force which pushes against anvil of press.
The hydraulic press can serve many different functions in the laboratory, from pressing pellets of sample material for spectroscopic analysis, pulling apart samples for tension testing, crushing materials into flattens sheets or molding them into different shapes to gluing and coating materials.
Safety
Hydraulic presses produce immense force, making them suitable for many industrial applications. Utilizing hydraulic fluid, two interconnected pistons create pressure that can crush and mold various materials such as metals, plastics and composites - as well as many others.
Hydraulic presses have many uses in manufacturing, from stamping to compression molding and making molds and dowels for components, to compressing soil or even forming concrete.
Although hydraulic presses can be powerful tools, their high energy consumption hinders their growth and utilization. To address this issue, we implemented a VSD control system to decrease hydraulic pump motor's energy consumption - this allowed electrical power consumption for one shift of operations to vary linearly with press stroke count resulting in significant energy savings.
