How to Make a Coin Using a Hydraulic Press

Hydraulic presses provide an efficient method of producing high-quality coins in bulk quantities quickly, as they're more time and cost efficient than manual processes.
However, it's essential that you understand how to calculate the correct tonnage for your coin pressing machine in order to get optimal results and eliminate inaccuracies.
Basics
The hydraulic press is an indispensable tool that is invaluable for performing numerous tasks, from forming metal to stamping leather, punching drawing coining material etc. With such great strength and versatility it has proven itself useful in both junkyard industries as well as for other purposes; therefore many find it fascinating to study its mechanics more closely.
Hydraulic presses utilize similar principles as traditional hydraulic systems to crush objects with force. Operating under Blaise Pascal's Law - whereby pressure within enclosed liquid remains constant - they use pistons and cylinders that work in concert to apply pressure against objects; slave and master cylinders connect via pipes for fluid transfer between small cylinders to large ones, creating pressure from each side simultaneously. A hydraulic press can have up to 25 tons of crushing capacity with microprocessor control enabling programming and controlling.
Materials
A hydraulic press is a large mechanical device that uses fluid pressure to exert force on an object. It consists of a steel frame, press cylinder, and pump connected by a movable bolster to form an "H". Pressure produced from fluid in the cylinders is magnified using hydraulic motors and pistons, enabling this machine to apply significant amounts of force onto metal products - hence its nickname as Bramah press after its inventor, Joseph Bramah.
Hydroforming, also known as hydraulic press machine hydroforming, offers clear technical and economic advantages over traditional stamping processes. Make sure your limit switch is properly set before turning on the hydraulic press machine; otherwise it could apply excessive pressure that could result in inaccurate results or cause lasting damage to its own mechanism.
Die Sets
All coins require two dies; one die bears the design for the front (obverse) side and one bears that of the reverse (back of coin). Each die must withstand immense amounts of pressure - as demonstrated by a display at Philadelphia Mint Public Tour, 50 tons are necessary to strike one nickel coin!
U.S. coins and medals feature artistic designs pressed directly onto them instead of being etched by hand. To produce dies that stamp obverse and reverse designs onto coins, the Mint uses a blank steel rod with a cone-shaped face called a master hub which contains designs to be stamped into coins; then uses this hub in a slow squeezing process to produce working hubs and dies for stamping the designs into coins.
Squeezing puts considerable strain on dies, which wear down over time. Therefore, when using a hydraulic press it's crucial to know when you have reached your desired reduced size; otherwise it could easily overpress your coin and lead to its details becoming lost on its final product.
Setup
Hydraulic presses are machines that harness pressurized liquid to compress material. An essential tool in manufacturing, hydraulic presses can be utilized in many different ways and it's essential that users understand how a hydraulic press operates so as to use it safely and correctly.
Step one in setting up a hydraulic press is selecting an appropriate tonnage for your task at hand. This step is essential as different metals require different levels of pressure when being worked with. A gold coin press may require different pressure than silver or steel coin presses - so choosing an ideal tonnage will bring about optimal results.
Hydraulic presses have many applications in laboratory testing and sample preparation. At XRF Scientific, we offer manual, power, and motorized hydraulic presses with both metric and imperial ton capacities to help achieve high levels of accuracy in sample preparation for XRF analysis. Furthermore, these hydraulic presses can be programmed to apply specific pressure points based on your needs - making these presses an invaluable asset.
