How to Build a Electric Hydraulic Press

Hydraulic presses require considerable and constant pressure in order to achieve the mechanical results necessary for metal forming and powder compacting processes, and can produce significant force, measured in tons.
Hydraulic presses consist of piston cylinders connected by tubing that generate varying levels of mechanical pressure. Each of these piston cylinders, also referred to as piston rods, allows users to generate pressure by controlling fluid volume or volumetric flow through them.
Frame
Hydraulic presses employ a pump to apply force against material being pressed, with either electric, pneumatic or manual pumps available depending on application and press size. Each pump connects to an expandable steel cylinder which extends when hydraulic system engages to press with tons-rated force against material being pressed against.
Hydraulic presses differ from mechanical presses by having few moving parts and being easier to operate, which decreases both maintenance costs and down time for the machine.
Hydraulic presses can be tailored to specific applications through various controls and features like traversing workheads, double palm buttons, daylight modifications and overload protection preventing pressure levels from reaching unsafe levels ensuring consistent results without guesswork of whether the machine is producing sufficient force. A variety of industries rely on hydraulic presses' versatility and speed as an aid in fabrication and assembly processes.
Cylinder
Electric hydraulic presses work by applying pressure on the workpiece through their cylinder, which consists of two metal pipes filled with hydraulic fluid. Its purpose is to generate compressive force which drives an anvil and die; available in 8, 15 and 25 ton configurations with relief valves installed to protect workpiece from excess pressure.
To calculate the total surface area of a cylinder, you can use this formula: V=pr2h where p is pi and r is radius; height being H.
Electric hydraulic presses are more affordable to purchase and operate compared to mechanical presses, plus have fewer moving parts and require less maintenance - making them ideal for high-throughput applications like XRF sample pellet preparation.
Pump
A hydraulic press's heart lies within its hydraulic system. It converts mechanical energy to liquid pressure energy that can then be used to compressive force on the ram. A typical system comprises two cylinders, piston, hydraulic pipes and an accumulator to help control thrust force of the ram.
Hydraulic presses are far easier to operate than their mechanical counterparts, as they can be managed by just one person. Furthermore, hydraulic presses offer even force throughout their ram stroke compared to mechanical ones which only reach full tonnage at their lowest point of travel.
H-frame hydraulic presses are large floor units made up of a steel frame, movable cylinder and pump to form the letter "H". They can be coupled with hand pumps for low-volume applications or air or electric pumps for consistent operations in facilities with pressurized air.
Controls
Every electric hydraulic press may differ slightly in its exact setup and control circuit configurations can easily be customized to meet various press models - including traversing workheads, pressure regulation, dual palm buttons and daylight modifications.
The basic electronic controller creates a voltage proportional to the product of force and time, which is then compared with an output signal from a pressure transducer in the hydraulic line of the press. For further accuracy, transducer output is enhanced through a function segment circuit designed to facilitate shut-off point anticipation.
When the comparator module 51 detects transducer output reaching its threshold, relay K2 activates to control the pump system so as not to reach desired total hydraulic pressure of predetermined value and ensure that damaging levels don't reach damaging levels. Furthermore, this also allows faster cycling than mechanical presses since energy isn't being wasted by slowing to near zero speed in order to build pressure/force.
